Mr Greenhouse touched my life in so many numerous ways, that have remained with me my entire life. He was my senior choir teacher during his first and second years at Willowbrook High School. Although these sentiments are many years from his passing, I want to extend my deepest condolences to his wife, children and extended family. He made a difference. Scot B. OMG, I am so sorry to just now come to this :) I am so heartbroken. Ken hired me at Berklee. He was a quiet leader who showed the world his grace. I will always remember his not killing a spider but instead setting it free. I remember his punctuality. "I have to make it to the train now". I remember Ken asking Me (come on now, really) for a letter of recommendation when he moved to Atlanta. I know he was ill but not really the extent. I may even have written his brother (?) To be honest I can not remember. OH MY! How sis a decade go by and my not knowing this - I am truly heartbroken. I do hope that Susan and his children will come to know that I truly believe that Ken was one of the most human human-beings I ever met and that I have not and will not forget him :( Shalom. It is a tragedy to loose someone so young and talented. I went to school with both Ken and Jack, grades K thru high school graduation. I was so fascinated by their talents. I especially enjoyed chorus, working on plays and best of all, hanging out in Mr. Seaman's music room just jamming with Ken at the piano.
He is at peace now with God, no more pain. He will live in my heart forever.

What a tragedy. Ken was my TA for freshman theory at IU in 1972. He was an amazing teacher with an incredible sense of humor. My son just started as a cello performance major at Fredonia, and his friend is a jazz bass player, Noah, who just began at Berklee. I was about to ask Noah to look up Ken when I thought to investigate Ken's whereabouts. I'm shocked and saddened to hear of his passing, and even sadder to hear of his suffering.

i have always thought of him fondly, and I do remember him to this day, 43 years later. My condolences.

I just learned of Ken's death today. I have thought of him often over the years as he was my colleague and responsible for hiring me as band director at Willowbrook. My son, Shaughn, is working in a lab researching ALS at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He says that they are getting close to understanding this horrible disease. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

I just learned of Ken's passing today. Ken and I lived at the same dorm (MRC) at Indiana University in Bloomington. We had a great group of friends at MRC and Ken was a big part of our circle of friends. I have many personal memories of Ken. Both of us got married a little later in life and were very happy to begin raising a family. He was so proud of Susan, Max and Rebecca. I'm glad that we got to visit with them when we were passing through Marietta about ten years ago. That was the last time I saw Ken. He always sent a card or called my wife and I on our anniversary. We meant to call him when he stopped contacting us, but unfortunately I'm not very good about keeping in touch. It's hard to believe that I first met Ken over 40 years ago. I will always remember him. He was a great guy.

My best friend growing up as a kid in Perth Amboy. A talented ventriloquist, he complimented his twin brother Jack who was a talented magician. He always called me on my birthday, never missing a single one in 50+ years. It was great to speak to him each year. I will miss his yearly birthday wishes. He will never be forgotten as a dear friend...

I'm so sad to hear of Ken's passing. He was such an inspiration to me as I studied at Berklee. As I recall memories, I can't help but laugh. He was so much fun and he cared so deeply about people. I remember his enthusiasm about buying baby food at Bread & Circus and how thrilled he was to know he was giving his baby the best. What a neat man to share these moments with his students. And, I laugh when I remember him talking about going into the Greenhouse on Harvard Square and excitedly telling the waitresses that his last name was Greenhouse. He was scandalized that they didn't care! How could they not care? Who couldn't love his infectious enthusiasm for life?! He was so joyful and inspired. And because he was a man of integrity, wisdom and talent, his words meant so much. I'll never forget him and the wisdom he shared. My most sincere condolences to his family. You are in my prayers.

Ken will never be forgotten, in our house the name Ken Greenhouse was always and will always be remembered. He inspired my husband and my son is following his steps in music as a Jazz Music Major. He was a kind, loving person who I had the pleasure to meet many years ago, as he was my husband friend from college. When we learned he had ALS my heart went out to his family, as my mother passed years ago of the same disease. Our family recently before his passing walked for the ALS foundation and collected funds for research. We are very sorry for your loss.

As I sat thinking of what I might say about knowing Ken, I looked up & saw the candle icon in front of me. That, I think, is a great symbol for Ken's life. His flame of creativity, energy & caring lit many other candles that burn brightly illuminating our world. And those flames will ignite others to brighten even more lives. Thanks Ken for sharing the light that was you with so many.

WOW! I too am just learning of Ken's passing on. Please accept my deepest condolences especially to his family and all impacted by his phenomenal presence. What an honor it has been to know Ken. He was a phenomenal teacher, chair, and musician. As he has been to so many, Ken was remarkable, encouraging, and inspiring to my musicianship and artisry while I was a student at Berklee. He and very few others are to be credited for my present day teaching.

Ken, may you rest easy now. You will be missed!

I knew Ken to be caring, dedicated, kind and sincere towards his students and colleagues. He always brought much joy and fun to his classes and performances at Willowbrook. The students and audiences looked forward to each performance and Ken’s unique interpretations and panache. He freely shared his talents and love, and for this, I hope you know that he was deeply appreciated. Ken will be held in the hearts of all those who knew him.

Ken Greenhouse was a remarkable man. How proud you must be that he was your husband, father, brother... How proud I am that he was my friend. His music lives in my head and his intelligence and caring was reflected in everything he did.

When he would return to Bloomington each summer to conduct the IU Summer Music Clinics Vocal Jazz Ensemble, he would go to Waffle House for breakfast on Sunday and tell them how wonderful their food was and how he looked forward to eating that breakfast every year. Then on Monday we would drop off concert attire at Kinzer Cleaners across from the Music School and he would compliment them on the fine job they always did and how great the prices were! The whole week went about that way; Ken telling everyone how much he loved Bloomington and revisitng his favorite places. He often fell fast asleep while observiing rehearsals. The doze would last a minute or two. He would awaken abrubtly and remind me that it was only geniuses that took short naps. He credited them with instant refreshment! He came highly prepared each year to perform on the faculty recital. Sitting alone on that huge stage at the Musical Arts Center at that beautiful piano, he never failed to create magic.

You are with me, my friend. I won't forget what a fine musician and person you were. Thank you for making our lives so much kinder, funnier, creative and musical.

Dear Greenhouse's,

I am very sad to receive the news of Ken's passing. His professionalism and sense of humor will always be remembered by those who had the pleasure of having him as a colleague. In 1986 I collaborated with Ken and The College Singers in a performance of my piece "Fantasy, The Planet Earth". His favorite line in the text was "Onward, to the Now Time". In this "now time" I'm smiling as I recall so many fond memories of Ken.

I have never met a person who was nicer, wiser or more positive! Ken will be missed. He was a great mentor to me at Berklee as a vocal principal and as a budding vocal arranger. Rest now, dearest Ken. We will miss you more than you'll ever know. You've been with me at the last note of every single song I've performed on stage since my days at Berklee... I can almost see you holding stone still, bright eyes open, intensity still pulsating, vibrating with that last moment, waiting. I will always remember you and I will always cherish then day you called me friend.

Never got to meet your family; the closest I got was your letter telling me you were going out with Susan. I'm sure they're wonderful, both by their own merits and by your proximity.

To your family my deepest thoughts.

Lucky Angels!

To Susan, Max, and Rebecca, Blessings to you in this tough time. I hope that you never grow tired of hearing good things about Ken. I remember him best as a bachelor-genius of a choir director, wrestling with us college singers in the most loving way to get us to sound good. Then in his tux just the moment before the first chord was sung, giving us a sign to smile. In your arms Ken, Gene Puerling never had it so good...and for us who were fortunate enough to be directed by you, you made something scary,to be, excellent, possible, and fun-you truly gave us something... I just hope the angels are prepared to work on the material on their own outside of rehearsal. Goodbye Mr. Greenhouse, With much love, chris

To Susan, Max and Rebecca,
I wish you comfort as you absorb this great loss. I knew Ken in the 80's, as a friend, who accompanied me in concerts at the Jewish Young Adult Center in Brookline, where he organized the music. Then later, as a member of his devoted voice department at Berklee. Ken never missed an anniversary. He was a true friend, colleague and mentor to me. And his greatest joy of all, was his family which he talked about with pride and love.

Ken was a true, loyal friend and immensely talented musician & caring teacher, and I saw this first hand as a student worker of his at Berklee College of Music He is at peace now after this terrible illness, but I know everyone has missed him, and now more than ever. My deepest and most sincere thoughts go out to Susan, Max and Rebecca - who surely feel this loss most profoundly. You have all been incredibly brave and loving - and I know Ken was so very happy to be part of his wonderful family. I miss you my friend! - David Hart, Stanford University

Rest In Peace, Kenneth Greenhouse, composer, pianist, mentor, and most of all TEACHER. He changed my life at Berklee with his direction, brilliance, humor, and encouragement. I will never forget the sheer joy of rehearsing and performing with The College Singers, especially at his 15th year celebration concert. Ken showed me how to be a conductor, a director, a teacher, and to live and breathe music through those disciplines with love. His gentle guidance gave me confidence when I had none. Thank you, Ken. You are beloved and missed.

During my time at Berklee, I was a Music Ed major and bass player, so I didn't get to know Ken well. But so many of my vocalist friends who were Berklee students spoke so highly of him. After his death, I was asked to sing with other Berklee alums in a choral tribute to him --- an arrangement of Bill Evans' "Some Other Time". Preparing and then singing that piece at a memorial concert for him was a musical high point for me. Thank you, Ken, for all of your wonderful work and the legacy you've left.

Ken was one of the few teachers at Berklee who provided me with an opportunity to reach a very high bar from a beginner's approach, whereas others required that you were already "there" and thus didn't allow the chance. He could nurture and coax great things from his students and in doing so everyone experienced the highest levels of accomplishment and art. My only regret is that I did not have Ken for a private teacher. My heartfelt condolences to his family. Thank you so much for sharing him.

I have thought fondly of Ken often through the past 32 years. To me, he was a teacher, a mentor, and a friend. He taught me things about music that still influence my piano playing and composition today. When I graduated, he encouraged me to pursue a career in theatre as I had dreamt of doing for years. My time in theatre was wonderful, and I credit Ken with helping me to pursue that endeavor. These days, I do a lot of composing and arranging, using the tips that he shared with me in high school. I thank God for blessing me by allowing me to know Ken and carry many precious memories in my heart. Willowbrook High School, class of 79.

I'd like to share a poem with you.

MISS ME BUT LET ME GO

When I come to the end of the road,
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in gloom-filled rooms,
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little--but not too long,
And not with your head bowed low;
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me--but let me go.
For this is a journey that we all must take,
And each must go alone.
It's all a part of the Master's plan,
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart,
Go to the friends we know,
And busy your sorrows in doing good deeds.
Miss me - but let me go

Susan, we have thought about Ken and his family so many times since visiting a while ago. My husband, Rob, and I have lost a dear friend. Ken is one of the most genuine and sincere people we have ever known. As an educator he was the best. His arrangements were like non other in the music world. His attention to detail was incredible; often noted by his use of the stick on memo notes. His friendship was treasured by our whole family, but mostly by Rob and myself. Ken- You are now free!

To Ken's Family:
During High School I've never felt a greater friendship than I had with both Jackie and Ken. For years Ken had been sending me a birthday card every December which to me was the greatest. He was thoughtful and kind and like his brother Jackie, always had a sense of humor. I will always be grateful for how Ken and Jackie helped me with the High School Play. This has been a tremendous loss to the world and his family. I miss you Ken.
