Kate Puzey Obituary

Catherine Irene Puzey passed away on March 11, 2009, in the West African nation of Benin. "Kate", as she was fondly known to her many friends and family, was one of 100 Peace Corps volunteers serving in Benin. She had lived in the village of Badjoude since June 2007, working as a teacher in secondary education as well as a devoted advocate for local women and children.
Kate was born in Augsburg, Germany, on June 19, 1984, where she lived with her family until they moved to Okinawa, Japan, when she was nine years old. From an early age Kate distinguished herself as a remarkably compassionate and talented spirit. In high school she was elected student body president both her junior and senior year (an honor usually held only by seniors) in a school with over 2,000 students. After graduating at the top of her class in 2002, Kate attended The College of William and Mary and majored in sociology with a minor in business. She spent her junior year studying abroad in France at the University of Montpelier, developing a proficiency in French that would later allow her to be a teacher in Benin.
A truly global citizen, during her brief 24 years Kate traveled extensively to such varied places as England, Indonesia, Italy, Ghana, Greece, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Singapore, Spain, and Thailand. She was a gifted writer whose descriptions of her travels allowed family and friends to enjoy her experiences vicariously, as well as a talented photographer who captured the world with sensitivity and insight.
Kate dedicated much of her life's energy and talents towards caring for others. She worked with underprivileged children throughout college, volunteered with the International Rescue Committee for a year following graduation, and finally joined the Peace Corps service. She approached life with a vibrant joy tempered with wisdom beyond her years. Moreover, Kate possessed and nurtured a gift for embracing people of all walks, an appreciation for their diversity, a talent for understanding the nuances of human nature, and a delight in living life to the fullest. She was petite of stature, but her inspiring touch upon those who knew her was larger than life.
Kate leaves behind her parents, Harry and Lois Puzey of Cumming; her older brother, David of Berkeley, Calif.; her grandmother, Mrs. Mary Benson of Buford; numerous loving aunts, uncles, and cousins; and many heartbroken friends throughout the world.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, March 20, at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming. A ceremony celebrating Kate's life will be held at Birmingham United Methodist Church in Alpharetta at noon on Saturday, March 21, with interment following at New Prospect United Methodist Church in Buford.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Kate's memory to the Kate Puzey Memorial Fund, c/o Smith, Gambrell and Russell, LLP, Suite 3100, 1230 Peachtree Street, NE, Atlanta, GA 30309-3592

Dear Puzey Family,

My heart goes out to you. My sincerest condolences. I volunteered in Benin in '95-'97 and was the same age as Kate at that time. It was an amazing life changing experience. Reading Kate's blog confirmed to me that she gave her all during her service in Benin. She clearly respected the Beninese community, and allowed herself to be fully immersed in its culture. Her time in this country was not in vain, she has left a positive mark. She was certainly courageous and committed to the Beninese girls in the community. No doubt, the community will always remember and celebrate Kate.
God bless. She is now in peace. Thank you for raising such a beautiful spirit, Kate, that has made a positive difference in this world.

Puzey Family,
I did not know Kate, nor had I heard her story until this morning on a repeat of 20/20. To say it saddened me is an understatement. Your daughter was truly a unique person and you should be extremely proud of her and the work she was doing. Unfortunately, God has called her home to do her great work among the heavens. You have lost a loved one and the world has lost a spirit that can never be replaced. Thank you for raising an amazing person. God bless all of you.

Puzey family,

I just saw the 20/20 story on Kate's murder. I can't imagine the depth of grief you are experiencing over this tragedy. I want you to know that I was inspired by Kate's story. She is truly a hero. Her bravery certainly changed the lives of the young women in Africa. We need more people like Kate in this world.

To the Puzey family,

I'm so deeply saddened to hear of Kate's passing. I met Kate during my short stint with Peace Corps Benin in July of 2008. I didn't know Kate for long, but I'd like you to know that I was struck by her kind, welcoming, and generous spirit. May you find peace in knowing that she made innumerable contributions to the lives of those around her. My prayers are with all of you.

I just learned of Kate's death and have not been able to get her or her family out of my mind. My daughter, Sarah Polk, went to school with Kate in Okinawa, Japan and graduated with her. I still remember Kate's stirring thoughts she shared in her speech as the class validictorian. She was one of the most amazing, caring, humble, giving, and compassionate girls I had ever met. Her parents and brother David and anyone who had the privilege of knowing Kate realizes we have lost an angel. My prayers are with you all. May you feel God's peace and Kate's love throughout the days ahead.

I just learned of Kate's death and I am so, so sorry. The news hit me so directly because my son was a PCV in Togo for two years recently and I met so many wonderful young Americans serving their country in West Africa when we visited him in his village. Why do bad things happen to such good people? We will never know the answer but we will live our lives with her in our hearts.

Dear Puzey family,
I was a tutor with Kate in Project Phoenix at William and Mary. Kate was one of the nicest, most loving and genuine people I've ever met. I will never forget her kind, unfailing smile, nor her efforts to befriend and include me as a shy freshman. She truly dedicated her life to serving others. At William and Mary, I was amazed at the vast amount of service she was committed to and it was no surprise that she chose to serve in the Peace Corps. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of such an exceptional young lady. Having seen your interviews with reporters, I can truly understand why she was so special to so many. Your passion and temperament even after such a tragic loss was most moving-a perfect example of the type standards exuded by your daughter.

My deepest condolences to you. I shall continue to pray for your strength and comfort.

To the Puzey Family,

We are so saddened by the news of Kate’s death. We did not know her, and I cannot imagine the grief that her family is suffering at this time. Our daughter was a Peace Corps volunteer on a tiny island in the Philippines in 1997. She educated people on the importance of the environment. We were fortunate to welcome her safe return home, here in Cumming (1999) after two years of hard, but most rewarding work.

Upon her return, our daughter put emphasis on the importance of all the contributions that are made by our Peace Corp volunteers who do a tremendous job in enhancing our country’s image abroad.

It is encouraging to know that Kate’s attitude reflected the dedication and motivation that our volunteers must possess to assume the responsibilities associated with this important service.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kate’s loved ones. The Puzey family can be very proud of their daughter. She made a difference in the lives of her students in west Africa and will never be forgotten.

Sincerely,

The Toth and Hurkmans’ family

Mr. and Mrs. Puzey and David,
My husband, Bob, joins me in offering our heartfelt condolences over the loss of Kate. While we have not met you, both of our daughters knew Kate through their having been together at William & Mary. However, it was in two other ways that our whole family feels particularly close to Kate and your family. Both our daughters, Virginia ('06) and Heather ('09), worked with Kate in Project Phoenix. All three girls seemed to share a strong commitment to this program. In addition, like Kate, Virginia just completed her service in the Peace Corps (Ukraine), and Heather will be serving with the Peace Corps in Africa after she graduates. As in our own family, we know how proud you are of Kate's extensive achievements. We pray that your memories of her magnanimous personality and all the many gifts that she contributed to the world around her will support you in the years to come.

March 20, 2009

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Puzey, and David,

My sister Heather and I were tutors in Project Phoenix with Kate, at William & Mary. It didn't surprise me in the least to hear that she had joined the Peace Corps, and I know that she was a wonderful volunteer. I can imagine how dearly she was loved by the people she helped there. We are all so grateful for her service.

I served in Benin as a Peace Corps Volunteer 20 years ago and was posted 2 hours east of Natitingou. I know Benin and her people well and can only imagine the deep sense of loss and sadness the country must be feeling at this moment. The people of Benin were very fortunate to have Kate in their midst. You are in the thoughts of all returned Benin volunteers. Kate was a shining example of the best we can be.

We here on Okinawa where Kate spent her teen-age years are grieving in sync with Lois and Harry. Her brother David is equally an outstanding Global Citizen, and I know he will miss the camraderie of having an out-going, intelligent sister. We cannot wish Kate back, but what we can do is try for one minute, hour, day, week, month or year to live as she did in dedication to others, and with spirit in all that we do-Kate is truly and example for young and old alike. Please accept our heartfelt condolences from friends on Okinawa. "A Deer's Cry" and "The Gladiator Song"( Now We are Free) are on the album "LISA" and they are dedicated to the memory of Kate Puzey

My wife and I have gone to Uganda during the past three summers. The challenges the people face in all of Africa are overwhelming.
To think about your daughter giving her life in serving others (especially to those who have such a great need) is the ultimate sacrifice!
Our hearts and prayers go out to you in your loss. Even though we did not know your daughter, we are deeply saddened upon hearing this news.
Kate's life (your precious daughter) is marked as someone who has giving her life to make a remarkable difference in this terribly upside down world. The people of Benin will not soon forget her!

To those who suffer loss, there is great encouragement found in the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:51-58.

It is our prayer that God's grace and comfort will give you outward strength and inner peace in the days and weeks to come.

As a west African, Nigerian to be specific, I am saddened by this news. I do not know Kate but I understand the importance of people like her in trying to pull the people of the Bottom Billion out of dispair. It is a thankless job, but we will be forever greatful for her life. I know this brings little or no comfort to the family but I hope that they take comfort in knowing that her life was well lived. Folks its up to us to continue Kate's work.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Puzey,

I was saddened to hear of the passing of your daughter on the AJC website. Also being from Georgia and currently working in Africa with the UN Peacekeeping mission I understand the hardships she endured by living and working in this environ. You should remain proud that you raised a daughter who was willing to share so much of herself with others. There are so many lives here that she assuredly touched and rest assured that she will be honored and remembered by those she helped. Nothing I can offer will assuage the anguish of your loss but you will be in my prayers.
