DIMON, III, Joseph Dr. Joseph H. "Skoot" Dimon, III Dr. Joseph H. Dimon, III, Orthopaedic Surgeon, founding partner of Peachtree Orthopaedic Clinic, native southerner and beloved friend to many the world over, died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, March 24, 2014 at his home in Northwest Atlanta. He died surrounded by his family, after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. He was 84 years old. Dr. Dimon, known by family, friends and colleagues the world over as simply "Skoot," hailed from Columbus, Georgia where he was born on February 16, 1930. President of his Senior Class at Columbus High School, he went on to graduate Phi Beta Kappa from The University of The South in Sewanee, Tennessee in three years. At age 19, he attended Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, graduating in 1953. He then served in the U.S. Army at Fitzsimmon's Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado and later in Germany for two more years. He completed his orthopaedic residency through the Harvard Program at Children's Medical Center and at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he was Chief Resident in his final year. Returning to his native Georgia in 1960, Dr. Dimon joined Robert Wells, MD, and James Funk, MD to form the Peachtree Orthopaedic Clinic (P.O.C.) where he continued to practice for 40 years. From 1969 to 1975, he also worked as Team Physician to the Atlanta Hawks and more recently served as Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Piedmont Hospital. Dr. Dimon's achievements included serving as State Chairman of the Georgia Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, Clinical Professor of Orthopaedics at Emory University School of Medicine, Professor and Chairman of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia, and Chairman of the Education Committee at Piedmont Hospital. In addition Dr. Dimon served as President of The Georgia Orthopaedic Society, The Atlanta Orthopaedic Society, the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons and the Society for Arthritic Joint Surgery. He was a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the American Orthopaedic Association. A generous supporter, teacher and advocate of numerous causes, Dr. Dimon went on rotation with his P.O.C. partners to work in Haiti for 35 years, and was also a major force in the professional training and development of orthopaedic nurses. Other examples of his ministry and service include his being member of the Board of Directors of Medicine and Ministry, his work in Depression Ministry, and Visiting Professor to India, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Annie Mitchell Dimon; five children: Joseph H. "Scoot" Dimon, IV (Maggie), Roz Dimon (James Dawson), Moppy Dimon Brumby (Mike), Ann "Booley" Dimon, Jenny Dimon Spratt, and five grandchildren. Also dear to his heart were those whom he and Annie loved as family. "Skoot Dimon was a world-class orthopedic surgeon, and as fine and loving a person as I have ever known. Those of us fortunate enough to have lived close to him have seen man at his best." (Mike Brumby, son-in-law) In lieu of flowers, if you would like, you may make a donation in his memory toward funding the Skoot Dimon Healing Arts Chair (Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence) or St. Anne's Episcopal Church, or the charity of your choice. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Anne's Church, 3098 St. Anne's Lane (near intersection of Moore's Mill and Northside Parkway), Atlanta, GA on Thursday, March 27, at 2pm followed by a reception.
