You have my deepest sympathy. Mr. Simmons was such an phenomenal individual. I have so many great memories. When I was stationed at Charleston AFB I met him from the workout group. Our workout sessions were at 5am, Monday-Friday, and he was always there. He was dedicated, and always positive. He always had a smile on his face, always encouraging, and had words of wisdom. He has such an positive impact on the workout group. The workout group will never be the same without him. He will be truly missed. He supported me, and always came to my events. Always loved, and never forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, and I pray God bring you comfort during this time.

To the family of Rev. Dr. Daniel Simmons Sr.
I was a student of Rev. Simmons weekly Bible Study class at Mother Emanuel AME Church. I enjoyed his teachings, his sense of humor and the stories that he told us of his life experiences and that of his children. His classes were always lively and inspiring. He will be greatly missed.

To my Dear customer, the Rev. Daniel Simmons, may your soul rest in the bosom of Our Heavenly Father above. You were my dear and inspiring customer, who always enlightened my day when you came by to visit and shop with us at , The Coach store. After hearing of this tragedy, my heart has been so heavy. I going to miss that big smile you always had, along with that deep demanding voice, when you came by asking for those, "knock offs"(insider), by all of us here at Coach . Yet, I know your family and friends, and church family will miss you even more. My heart is sadden, but rejoicing at the same time, for you left us doing what God requires of us all, which is studying, teaching, sharing, and witnessing His Word to and among the Believers, as well as the Unbelievers. Sleep on Rev. Simmons in the arms of Our Heavenly Father!

Dan was my supervisor from 1974-1976 at the Veterans Administration Regional Office in Columbia. He was a counselor for Vietnam Veterans and I was a work study student. I greatly admired Dan for his friendliness and strength of character. He was a living testament to the glory of God even then, 40+ years ago. I've often thought fondly of him and was greatly saddened to learn of his passing as he was truly a great man. He certainly touched my life and was a mentor in many ways. I'll never forget how he used to greet me saying, "What's happening MY BROTHER." I pray that God will comfort Dan's family in this difficult time. And I am grateful that his grace has continued to bring our cultures closer together. In Him.

Dear Family,
Please accept my profound sympathy. For an entire semester in 1971/72, I would meet Dan at 5AM in Columbia and sleep in his Cadillac while he drove us to Salisbury, NC for USC College of Social Work field placement at VA Hospital. A former Greyhound Bus driver, he loved to drive.
I lost touch with him after he left Columbia.
Words cannot express my sorrow. What a wonderful man in every way. He always had a smile, and always put others first. I will never forget his kindness.
Sincerely,

Condolences to the the entire Simmons family. I did not know Rev. Daniel Simmons. But I saw your family on Fox News. I was so amazed at your familie's strength. I could not sleep for two nights. I cried and prayed for your family. I still am praying for you. Please know that God is carrying you in his arms. I too suffered a great loss in 2014. I lost my father who was a preacher Bishop James L. Pittman suddenly and then my business was looted and totally destroyed in the Ferguson Riots months afterwards. I want to say that God carried me in his arms and he still is with me.Some days are a lot harder than others. But remember "Weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning." Although my business was destroyed and my Father went to eternal rest I realized I still had a dream. Something no man can destroy. I know my father is with me in spirit always. May you find comfort in knowing your loved one is always with you as you continue to honor his legacy.

Dear Simmons Family
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
You have given Rev Simmons. He will have eternal life. I think that is important. My family have watched and been so proud of your family: Faith and trust in Christ. There has been so much swirling around it is so hard to keep up with what is right. Y'all know what is right.
I lived in Charleston 5 years ago in Ansonborough. I know your beautiful Church Family. Although I do not know you personally, please know your extended Charleston family Loves and is praying for you.
Together there will be change. Your best example has set the stage for HUGE change. Please know, we love you and hate you are having to deal with this. Your loss is bringing the whole country together, but no family should have to endure that to make change.
Trust the Lord conquers all.

Earth has no sorrows that heaven can not heal
Even though right now hurt is what you feel
Memories gained never cease
My prayers is for God to grant you peace
Love and encourage each other along the way
Be real and caring in whatever you do and say
Although our love one has depart
They belonged to God right from the start
Death when it comes is only a forever sleep
Knowing they are going away is why we weep
Have joy in knowour soul is for God to keep
Know our loss is Heavens gain
Live your life for Jesus you see them again
Be grateful for the memories through life you compile
Be reminded of their every smile
Be please for time spent all the while
Although the sorrow is hard to bear
Grieve as you will know God is near
Look up to God for strength each day
He'll be with you tocarry you all the way
It doesn't matter if you are young or old
Keep God first know He is in Control
Give God your life and hold on to His hand
Allow him to guide you with purpose for He holds the plan
Live, love, and do have faith to do your best
Trust the Lordto do the rest

I'm so sorry for your loss, but awed by your attitude - that has been the thing which (so far as I can see) has dominated the press - that you are leading Charleston in expressions of forgiveness and genuine love (the hard stuff), and promoting unity and community in the face of such violence, is inspiring and incredible, and I take my hat off to you.
Thank you for the lessons, given at such a difficult time - they are poignant and important.

Rev. Simmons,
Words can not express the profound lost I feel at the news of your passing through this horrific act of evil,my heart is truly broken. It was two weeks ago that I saw you last, sitting on a park bench on a Sunday evening at the Battery, having seen the look and expression on your face, I pondered then, if you were not thinking of and preparing for a journey of your own? You were my Pastor for 5 years, a mentor, and a fellow Waffle House conversationalist even longer. I will remember with great fondness my mother and I visiting you at your next charge for that church's annual tea. I shall greatly miss our numerous conversations and debates at the Waffle House, but even more so, I shall miss your counsel, your example, your vision, and your leadership. Reverend Simmons, may you forever rest in the Eternal Joy that is Almighty God, and Peace Eternal through Christ Jesus.

God Bless this Beautiful Family, Our prayers and thought's are with you,
June 19, 2015
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

As I wrote this poem, I prayed for the sweet spirit of healing for your family.
Mother Emanuel's Song
Sweet music hums above the violence
Harmonized voices for a moment silenced.
Their lives spring up and sing out strong
With new voices shouting freedom's song!
Our sorrowful minds spin with fate's desire,
Wondering what sacred lyric will ever inspire,
A mighty hymn of love where hate was sung?
Surely notes of peace will form on every tongue
And Hope's chorus of thundering voices will swell
Into a deafening victory that will surely shake the gates of hell.
Lifting higher nine perfect souls used by God's omniscient will
Let Us All Be Filled With The Precious Voices of Mother Emanuel.
