I have just heard about the passing of Bill today and I am deeply saddened.
I have many memories of him from ASN meetings always guiding and supporting the younger generation of nephrologists. A kind and gentle soul who will be missed by all who knew him.
May he rest in peace.

I'm so sad today.
Pr McClellan was so a nice person.
He was such an enthusiastic support for our International Seminar on Renal Epidemiology.
I'm very moved to think that his trip in Paris last September for our Seminar may be one of his last trip. I hope he enjoyed the few days he spent here with his wife.
We will miss him so much. The future Seminar won't be the same.
In the name of the french nephro-epidemiologists he met, Julien, Emilie, Olivier, Cecile, Emmanuelle...I'm sending a warm hug to his family.

To Ann, and Bill's family - the news of Bill's passing is absolutely arresting. He has been a very important part of my life since the late 60's, and though we had not visited much lately, I will miss him as a brother. His accomplishments are remarkable, and his extensive family and following speak eloquently to his humanity. My heart is with you, and I look forward to spending time with you, Ann, and all of you, in celebrating his life.

Ann, Mike and I have just heard of Bill's death from our doctor, Jon Dailey. We are deeply saddened to hear of Bill's death. We knew him best as we visited at class reunions and through his special love for you and your children and grands. He came to be with us at class reunions and always shared his heart and his spirit with us so as he years have gone by, he seemed more like a classmate himself. You are, and have been for so many years, as dear and treasured friend. We are so sorry. We will pray for you and your family. Mike and Dianne Griswold

Bill and I met and became friends nearly 45 years ago in Philadelphia when we were serving as interns at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He made an immediate impression with his intellectual curiosity, adventurous spirit, and love of life. We had many discussions over the years (and even a few arguments) about politics, world affairs, religion, philosophy, medicine, and many other issues. I always felt that Bill himself was a bigger than life character who seemed to fill the room with his energy. His love for Ann, and for his children and grandchildren was wonderful to observe. He also had a genuine interest in his friends which was a model for all of us. I am still stunned that he is actually gone. My wife Jane and I send our love and prayers to Ann and the family.

As a fellow Medical School classmate of Bill's, I remember him well as an excellent student, a winning personality, and always willing to help at any time. Like so many, we lost touch after graduation, but by reading his obituary and these comments, it is obvious the superb physician and man he continued to be. I offer my true condolences to Ann and his family with these well known words, "well done, thou good and faithful servant".

To Ann and Bill's family. I am a nephrologist at the University of Washington in Seattle. I knew Bill from professional interactions in the renal community since I was a renal fellow in the early 2000's. I found him to be a kindred spirit, extremely passionate about his work, about the care of patients with kidney disease, and always supportive, encouraging and enthusiastic about the work of others. He was a kind ally who used his wisdom and seniority to help those new to the field. I was very sad to hear of his passing. I hope that it gives your family some comfort to know how much he meant to us in the renal community and how sorely he will be missed. Ann O'Hare

I am saddened to hear about Bill's passing. I offer my sympathy to Ann, their children and the family. I have knew Bill professionally for over 20 years. We were kindred spirits in using epidemiology to generate new knowledge that would prevent and treat kidney disease, thereby relieving suffering for millions. Bill was an intellectual champion who cared about the disparities he saw in disease and outcomes. And he offered his expertise to young researchers and trainees to help them make their work better. I will always remember him as the consummate gentleman who stimulated us to do better work that would serve humankind.

Dr. William McClellan was the most intelligent man I've ever known. Condolescences to his family. Special memories of him during the opening of West Georgia Renal Dialysis Unit. I had the distinct pleasure of knowing him and working with him during the opening of the Renal Unit, August,1979. A wonderful doctor..

My deepest condolences to Ann and the McClellan family. I owe a big debt of gratitude to Bill. He helped get CDC's CKD Initiative off the ground, serving as co-chair of the expert panel that resulted in the blueprint for the public health agenda, and he was a big supporter throughout. He was very knowledgeable and engaging, helping to shape many professionals in the areas that were dear to his heart. He will be missed.

Bill was an inspiration to all of us who strived to use evidence to improve the care of patients. He was an inspiration to me at a critical time in my career. His wise council and principled approach to solve problems will be very much missed. My sincerest sympathies to the family.

Bill was a highly intelligent, thoughtful and gentle human being who possessed the keen ability to articulate with all persons under any circumstance to exchange levels of understanding. He will be sadly missed, with his legacy of scholarliness being imparted to countless numbers of personal, professional and student contacts. Indeed a sad loss to all.
