Floyd Hoard Obituary

50th Anniversary observance: A ceremony will be held at the historic Jackson County courthouse at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2017, to mark the 50 years that have passed since Floyd "Fuzzy" Hoard, the local prosecutor, was killed by a car bomb wired to the ignition of his car.
Hoard, a 40-year-old father of four, was killed instantly. Ultimately, five members of the "Dixie Mafia" were be convicted of the murder.
The memorial service will include Hoard's son, G. Richard "Dickey" Hoard, who was 14 when his father was killed. Dickey Hoard, pastor of the Oconee River Methodist Church in Athens, will read from his 2007 book about the murder, "Alone Among the Living: A Memoir of the Floyd Hoard Murder."
