Capt. Dailey Obituary

Dailey, John L. Jr. Captain John L. Dailey Jr., USN (Ret), passed away on March 20, 2012 at the age of 61, after an extended battle with cancer. John was born and raised in Aurora, Il., where he graduated from Marmion Military Academy in 1969. John went on to attend the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned as an Officer in the United States Navy in June 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree in International Security Affairs. John later earned a Masters degree in International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in 1989. John served with distinction during his 29 year naval career during which he served aboard ship, in the Pentagon, at Naval War Colleges and, most notably, as a helicopter pilot. The pinnacle of John's naval career came in 1991 when he assumed command of Helicopter Squadron H-2, based at NAS Norfolk. As Officer in Charge of Detachment, John led the squadron in theater during the Gulf War. John thoroughly embraced his service in the U.S. Navy and was in large part defined by all of its rich traditions- honor, integrity, courage, and leadership. Upon his retirement, John embarked on a career as a writer which had long been a dream of his. John published many book reviews and articles and ultimately established a successful business as a freelance writer in Virginia Beach. A poet at heart, John loved moving people to action, thought and emotion through the power of the written word and he touched many in this capacity. John faced his illness in the manner he faced life itself with steely determination and unyielding good cheer. John was preceded in death by his loving parents - Mercedes and John L. Dailey Sr. He is survived by his wife Kimberly, his three children Christopher, Catherine, and Kara and his stepson Taylor Gustafson. John is also survived by his three brothers Michael Dailey and his wife Susan, Kevin Dailey and his wife Barbara, and James Dailey.

John would be happy that the Cubs are going to allow fans into Wrigley Field again this season, amounting to about 20 percent capacity. John and I were great baseball fans as kids in Little League.

I have said it before that John was a great baseball friend. He would be happy to know that the Cubs are going to allow about 20 percent of their fans in for each game at Wrigley Field, following Covid-19 Protocols this season.

John was a great baseball friend growing up in Aurora, Illinois. Nobody ever had a better teammate in Little League. As a news reporter, I got to do some of the great things that John always wanted to do like interview pitching great Sandy Koufax of the LA Dodgers. John would have been surprised to know that Koufax, while a nice guy, was not a good interview. He didn't like to talk about himself. CNN still paid for the story. Koufax was John's idol.

John and I were great baseball friends in Little League and grade school. I always thought of John, when I covered the LA Dodgers as a news reporter and got to interview Sandy Koufax, when he was a pitching coach for the team. The Dodgers could use John's left arm right now with all the current injuries! It's always fun to think of those boyhood memories. Deepest condolences. John always had a passion for sports. Best Regards. Rob Zaha, Culver City, CA.

I was shocked to hear the news of John's passing. He was too young. We were great baseball friends as kids -- morning, noon and night. He loved Sandy Koufax, whom I evenually got to interview as a news reporter. I thought of John. Deepest sympathies.

This is the saddest news I've heard since I heard about Merc's passing. John was even an upstanding guy when he was little! My thoughts have been with your family all of these years and I will never forget the adventures and misadventures with your family, like nights playing Twelve O'clock When the Ghost Comes Out, Fox and Geese in the snow, and just having snowball fights. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Keep in touch! I'm on Facebook and I'm in Seattle now. Mike, Kevin, and Bo, love to you all.
