Embrey, Betty Mae Hossler Doyle
With her work finished here, Betty Mae Hossler Doyle Embrey, 85, "got it over with" and joined her Lord and Savior October 6, 2016. Her journey began in Greentown, Ohio as the second child of four born to LeRoy and Selma Hossler. Betty attended Timken Vocational High School for three years where she played cornet in the band, but a move her senior year meant she would graduate from North High School in Phoenix. Sometime during that year, she met Jack Doyle whom she married that summer. After some technical training for Jack in Los Angeles and the birth of their daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Gregory (Doug), the family moved to Bisbee, arriving in the middle of the night. "I thought it was the end of the world!" she remembered though she soon became an active member of the community. Two sons, Jack (Barbara) and Michael, were born in Bisbee, where the family lived for the next 20 years. Copper strikes took Betty out of the home to work several part time jobs doing secretarial work for the Peace Corps and even to the meat counter at a grocery store. And that is what defined her - her work ethic, her love for her family and her selfless service to others. Not only did she serve as a Brownie and Cub Scout leader for her children, but she also helped the entire Bisbee High School band get to Disneyland one year by frying dozens of rosettes daily for weeks as a fundraiser. Though she only had the opportunity to take a few shorthand and business college classes, her dream was for her children to all earn college educations "so you can always take care of yourself." Her dream was realized. After a divorce and remarriage during which she was co-owner of Embrey's Jewelry in College Station, Texas, and a stint near Lake Roosevelt, widowhood sent Betty back to Phoenix. Here she again began her volunteer work including caring for the "crawlers" at the church daycare so young mothers could attend Bible study. She personally read through the Bible several times and lived out her strong faith through service to others. Therefore, she was ever-ready with casseroles and cards for special events, her sick friends or funerals. "Mrs. Green Thumb" could make anything grow, and her creativity extended into her home with furniture arranging, sewing and knitting. Betty loved travel, photos, ice cream and her pets. To the end, she had no patience with the unfinished and always made sure to "get it over with." Betty is predeceased by brother Robert and sister Barbara Greenwalt. She is survived by her three children, her younger brother, Timothy Niesz, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held at Christ's Church of the Valley, 7007 W. Happy Valley Rd, Peoria, Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to end childhood cancer.
