Daniel Kemp Obituary

Kemp, Daniel Steven
20, of Scottsdale, AZ passed away on December 21, 2011. Born December 8, 1991 at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, CA and died much too young, at age 20, in downtown Phoenix. He loved his entire extended family, all things Bay Area, sports, classic rock, history, and politics. He was a huge fan of all Stanford sports and was often a walking billboard for Stanford. He had an infectious smile, a great sense of humor, and a big heart. He attended Desert Mountain HS in Scottsdale, graduating in May of 2010 and then attended the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at ASU. He played soccer when he was young, then baseball and basketball as he grew older, and then golf. He loved playing classic rock intros, solos, and occasionally an entire song on the piano. He connected with adults as well or better than with his peers and was universally admired for his maturity and character. During high school, he volunteered his time at the Boys and Girls Club and then became a member of the staff. During college, he served 3 internships with local newspapers, most recently with the AZ Republic doing breaking news. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 2:30 PM at Green Acres Mortuary & Cemetery, 401 N. Hayden Rd. Scottsdale, AZ with a viewing and reception immediately following. Casual dress--sports jerseys, Stanford gear or Stanford colors would honor Daniel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale in his name.

I was stunned tonight when I heard of Daniel's passing. My heart goes out to all of you.
Although I haven't seen Daniel for a long time, I wanted to share a memory with you. In fifth grade, Daniel and my son, Luke, were a team in Mrs. C's gifted math class for the stock market game. Daniel would ride his bike to my house after school every day and he and Luke would "trade" stocks. I think they ended up taking third place in the district or state, competing against up to eighth graders. They thought the coolest thing was that they got to receive their award at Jillian's during school time.
I hope one day in the not too distant future you will be able to remember all of these joyful memories.

It was my pleasure and honor to have Daniel string for us at Arcadia News. I not only edited his copy, but had lunch with him a couple of times -- both activities fun and good experiences. He would have made a fine journalist and certainly was a fine young man.

Daniel was a wonderful intern in the Mesa bureau. He covered Chandler and Mesa police, both of which are extremely busy. He read 100s of incident reports in Chandler, and managed to cull some wonderful stories, using his own news judgement, which later turned out to be some of the most read items on azcentral.com. He was so polite, and nice, and kind. I really enjoyed working with him. My heart goes out to his family.
Thank you,
