Samuel Bookbinder Obituary
Bookbinder, Samuel
Samuel (Sam) Bookbinder, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2012, at Hospice of Arizona, Peoria, at age 85. A 32-year resident of Phoenix, Sam was a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and also resided in New York City and Bristol, Pa. Prior to retiring, he was a salesman/systems analyst-turned- business consultant in the computer field. Sam loved his grandkids, golf and gardening in that order. He served in the U.S. Naval Services as a ship's radioman, where he traveled the Pacific Rim. During his naval service, Sam was the recipient of: the Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, and Phillipine Liberation Ribbon, among other honors. He held a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics with a Philosophy minor from Western Case Reserve, Cleveland, Ohio. Although while attending school on the G.I. Bill, he planned to become a lawyer, his U.S. Navy radio training instead led him to the nascent computer industry. A world traveler in his jobs in the electronics and computer industries, and before working for himself, Sam worked as a systems analyst, accountant, sales representative and in other positions. The ultimate entrepreneur, he was self-employed as an independent business and venture capital consultant in the microchip industry. After retiring in Arizona, he spent hours each day tending his gorgeous cactus and flower gardens and his container vegetables. Sam served as a volunteer in Maricopa County Master Gardeners. Sam also enjoyed playing golf several days a week, often with his good buddy, Ike. Dear and devoted father of Noni Bookbinder Bell, and husband William J. Bell, Sr., of Shamong Township, Dorian Lee (deceased) and Morgan Frederick (deceased). Brother of Marilyn Swiers and husband Richard of Louisville, Kentucky, and Esther Maimone of Garfield Heights, Ohio. Dear uncle to several nieces and nephews, he was the most devoted grandfather (poppy) to William J. Bell, Jr. and Jaime Ann Bell. Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. It was Sam's request that he be cremated privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The National World War II Museum, The United States Olympics, or to the donor's favorite charity. Arrangements made by Abel Funeral Services.
