I had an opportunity some years back to view some of Dave's artwork
--and to talk with him about the concepts behind his thought-provoking imagery. He and I both shared an appreciation for sci-fi illustration. He had a special gift of designing and documenting creative imagery. I was looking forward to many more years of his talents. Unfortunately, his time was cut short. But my memories of Dave and his artistic skills are fond ones. Mikki, Pat and I are so sorry for your loss.

Dearest Mikki,

What a fine artist Dave was! What a gift he had. I'll always be warmed by the memory of how enthusiastic Dave was when he -- one of the few adults to do so -- read my fairy tale. These are the moments a writer lives for. And it truly was an honor that he offered to contribute illustrations to the piece. Ah, if only. First-time fairy talers don't get to choose their own illustrators, but if I'd ever been lucky enough to find a publisher for that story I would have been proud to ask them to consider Dave for the gig. Thanks again, Dave.

Lucy writes about Dave's erudition and eloquence, but I also remember the times when he was content with his own quiet company. How ironic for such a shy guy to be picked that night at the Magic Castle to come up on stage and be the victim-of-the-moment for the prestidigitator -- but Dave surprised us all by carrying off his assignment with good humor and his own special panache.

You two have always been in my heart, and now Dave will always be in my memory.

Take care,

Preston

Mikki has been one of my best buddies since 1979. Fond memories include Dave playing guitar in my old apartment (he was a wonderful musician), his valiant attempts to explain anything scientific to me (Pyramids on Mars??), and his putting up with a silly paper crown from the Christmas cracker during a traditional English dinner. Most of our recent friends never got to know Dave, which is a shame. My husband, Gibby Brand, and I send our love and prayers to Mikki as she moves forward ...

Mikki has been one of my best buddies since 1979. Fond memories include Dave playing guitar in my old apartment (he was a wonderful musician), his valiant attempts to explain anything scientific to me (the Pyramids of Mars??), and enduring the indignity of a colorful paper crown popped out of crackers during Christmas dinner. Any subject you ever had a question about, Dave could answer. Most of our recent friends didn't get a chance to know him, which is a shame. My husband, Gibby Brand, and I send much love and prayers as Mikki moves forward.
