Mel Cunningham Obituary
Mel Cunningham, 81, of Litchfield Park, died Jan 30, 2013 of complications from leukemia in Phoenix Arizona. Mr. Cunningham was born April 2, 1931 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Bachelor of Science from Arizona State College at Flagstaff (NAU) 1958. Masters of Hospital Administration from Washington University Missouri 1964. Mel grew up in Milwaukee and Spring Green/Taliesin (Mom's family, the Weston's, worked for Frank Lloyd Wright). Air Force Korean War vet. Thirty three year career with Samaritan Health Services (now Banner) serving as CEO of Good Sam & Maryvale Samaritan hospitals. He was a well loved leader who looked out for the staff and most importantly the patients. He fished & golfed around the world, attended ASU football & basketball games & was a lifelong Greenbay Packers fan. Mel lived an amazing life sharing his last years with Deborah Bamonte. Survived by his uncle Marcus, brother Milond, 3 children: Lynda, Lisa & Cindy (RJ), grandsons: Weston & Kyle, great granddaughter: Jovi and his ex-wife: Chris. Memorial Thompson Funeral Chapel, Friday, February 15, 2013 4pm - 8pm. In lieu of flowers donations to: The Salvation Army or The Phoenix Rescue Mission. Arrangements by Thompson Funeral Chapel in Goodyear, AZ.

Mel was a true " stand up guy ". You always knew where he stood on the subject at hand. I worked with him in the 70's and 80's and can attest to his administrative skills and integrity. In my opinion he was great CEO for Banner. We lost a good man when we lost Mel Cunningham.......F. Parks
