Josephine Marie Hiriart
July 25, 1932 - August 13, 2017
Josephine Hiriart, age 85, died peacefully on August 13, 2017, in Bakersfield, CA. Josephine was born in Bakersfield, on July 25, 1932, to Jean Pierre and Marguerite Ouret. She was the eldest of two children. Josephine grew up on Snow Rd., attended grade school at Norris, and then went on to graduate from Kern High School in 1950. Shortly after graduating, she married Antonio Iribarren on August 5, 1950. Together, they had one son, Frankie Iribarren. Josephine was widowed in the summer of 1967.
In 1969, Josephine married Noel Hiriart. Josephine was a loving and devoted wife to Noel for 41 years. Josephine worked alongside her husband in the sheep business, and also worked in the Norris School cafeteria as one of the main cooks for 26 years. Together, Josephine and Noel had one daughter, Denise Esnoz. Denise was a loving and caring daughter, and the light of their lives. She blessed them with four wonderful grandchildren, whom they loved and adored dearly. Josephine loved watching her grandchildren grow and enjoyed watching their Basque dancing, sporting events, and school activities. As any true Basque woman, she enjoyed cooking with love for her family. Josephine was known for her nurturing heart and feisty personality. She always put others' needs before her own and took care of everyone around her.
Josephine is gone, but never forgotten. She was loved by everyone that knew her, and will be dearly missed. We thank God for such an amazing wife, mother, and Nanie. Josephine is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Phillip Esnoz; grandchildren, Nicole, Joseph, Emily, and Elizabeth; nieces, Michele Turner, Debra Vasquez, Monique Heguy, Marguerite Ochandorena, and families.
The pallbearers will be Ignacio Ochandorena, Gabriel Iturbide, Dominic Iturbide, John Frassel, Tom Schulte, and Nicholas Giannelli. Honorary pallbearers are Lorenzo Echeverre and John Etcheverry.
Visitation will be held at Christ the King Church on Wednesday evening between 4 - 8 p.m. Rosary and Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2017, at Christ the King Church, 1800 Bedford Way.
