Robert Stotler Obituary

Robert "Bob" Newton Stotler 1924 - 2010 A very special man, Robert "Bob" Newton Stotler, 86, passed away peacefully, at home, on Saturday, October 9, 2010. He is now at his new home with the Lord. Bob was born on July 4, 1924, in Bakersfield, CA, to Aubrey and Helen Stotler. He graduated from Kern County Union High School in 1942 and went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1943 he went into the Army and served his country during World War II. He was discharged, with honors, in November of 1945. He then returned to his job at the railroad. He eventually went to work for Standard Oil for 17 years, and later retired as Maintenance Superintendent from San Joaquin Refinery. While working for the railroad he met his future wife, Vernia Mae Howell. They were married on April 13, 1946, spent 53 happy years together, and raised four children. Bob believed in giving back to his community, which he did with a generous heart. Some of his achievements were: Cub Scout Master for 12 years, Scout Master for 7 years, co-founder of the Fairfax Jr. Baseball Association, and baseball coach for 7 years. He was also a member of the Fairfax School Board for 56 years. His real love was guiding and helping children. He was a 4-H leader for 24 years, Kern County Swine Barn Chairman for 50 years, and Kern County Fair volunteer for 63 years. In 2001 the swine pavilion at the Kern County Fairgrounds was renamed the Stotler Swine Pavilion, in honor of Bob. He was a Mason for 60 years and a Shriner for 28 years. As a Shriner, he actively registered 76,000 children in the Child Identification Program. Many might remember him dressed as a clown while fingerprinting children, or riding his little clown car in parades with the Shriners. He was preceded in death by his parents, Aubrey and Helen Stotler; wife, Vernia (Vons) Stotler; son, Gary Stotler; granddaughter, Nicole Stotler; and sister, Jean Day. He is survived by his daughter, Suzy Stotler-de Ruyter; son, Paul and wife Katie Stotler; daughter, Judy and husband Johnny Gallagher; and former daughter-in-law, Jackie Stotler; grandchildren, Rachel Stotler, Robert "Bubba" Stotler Jr. and wife Heather, Gary Stotler Jr. and wife Brandi, Sean, Jeremiah, and Shamus Gallagher, and Samantha, Shawna and Ryan Stotler; great-grandchildren, Riley, Braya, Bladen and Ayden Stotler; sister, Marilyn Ledbetter; brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Pat Stotler; and special friend, Joanne Dellinger. Visitation and service will be at Hillcrest Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd. Visitation: Wednesday, October 13, from 4-8 p.m. and Service: Thursday, October 14, 1:00 p.m. Following the service there will be a celebration of Bob's life in the Harvest Hall, at the Kern County Fairgrounds. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kern County Shriners. Six words that sum up Bob's life, "It was all about the kids". www.bakersfield.com/obits

Bob you touched so many young and old of which none of them could never forget you. Your love for children, animals, and life gave all of us a lot to cherrish and to never forget. Even the little piggies had a soft spot in their hearts for you when you spoke to them. The SWINE Pavilion will go on forever in your memory and generations of families will all have a story to tell that will last for years and years to come. We will all miss your smiling face rather it be at the fair or under the clown makeup in parades or anywhere else you were. You will be deeply missed.

Town & Country Village will miss you Bob! Thanks for the memories!

My grandpa was one of a kind, and thats what i loved about him. I loved that he helped people all the time and never asked anything in return. He had everyone calling him grandpa and that was amazing. I will miss him so much, but im happy i had him as a grandpa and that he got to be there when Ayden was born. I love you Grandpa and im counting down the days when i will get to see you again.

Bob Stotler was an amazing man. There are so many memories of him that could be shared. The fair being the first place my family met him. The world is sad, but think of all the happy reunions he is having in heaven with all the people who's lives he has touched. There is no words to express our thankfulness for all that he did with the swine barn and through the schools. Stotler family know that during this time we are say prayers and wishing you peace.

The Manning family will deeply miss Bob. Renegade Football games will not be the same. We had season tickets right below Bob for years! He would stop by our tailgate every game and in his clown costume during the Potato Bowl! I'll miss my "I hugged a clown today" sticker. I'll also never forget the time my pig was over weight by 2 pounds at the fair and Bob called out 250, whew, the limit. Fairwell old friend, God Bless You.

October 13, 2010

Our Prayers are with all of you at this time. Bob's smile and enthusiasm will be greatly missed. The Pig Barn at Fair time will just not be the same.

The world has lost an irreplaceable man. Papa Stotler was someone who always made you smile, full of fun stories, a great role model, full of knowledge whether it be about animals to life in general and a outstanding citizen of Kern County. He will be greatly, greatly missed. I know he touched our family very much & we are proud to have been his friends. We love you Papa Bob!

Where do you start when talking about Bob. His love for the kids, his generous heart or the K.C. Fair cuz he was all about these things. It truly will never be the same without him at the fair. Alot of memories of the fair do include Bob like everyone else. My kids have always thought he was so funny being the "Clown", passing out costume jewlery to the kids or hanging out in the Swine barn for the dance or pig calling contest. We feel blessed to have been among the many people to call Bob our friend & to have been kissed or hugged each year by him. Those are the things we will miss about "our friend". Thank God for people like him. Now he can clown around up in Hog Heaven. Thanks to all of his family for sharing him with the rest of us.

Papa was such a special person to everyone he came in contact with. He blessed the students in my classroom for several years with "engagement rings for the girls" and special toys for the boys. They especially loved the stickers he would give each child as they gave him a hug. Our district has lost a very special prize. Personally, I have known Papa Bob from the swine barns at the fair. I am sure that he and my dad are having a great time in Heaven today. It really was "all about the kids."

I do not know where to begin, Bob has been a part of my life for so many years. He has be a wonderful friend, GREAT role model, and a second father on fair trips when I was much younger. To his family I say thank-you for sharing him with The Fair Family! I hope that we will always remember what Bob believed and lived , "it's ALL about the kids" Bob was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

There are no words to express the loss we all feel for you and your family. You all must know what a Great man your Dad was, and how many friends will miss him, but he will always be with us. My thoughts go out to you and every one that knew Bob.

It was a honor to have known Bob for so many years. The smiles that he brought to so many faces young and old is a tribute to the man he was, and will be remembered by. We as a family were all remembering him and my children argued about who had married him the most with the rings he gave to them while dressed like a clown. He did so many things for the children in Kern County, and I know that he is continueing his work in heaven with the children there. He will always be a part of who we are, and to his family celebrate the life he had and be happy for soon enough we will all be with him again in heaven. God bless you Bob. Prayers go out to your Family.
