Edith Somers Obituary

Edith "Ginger" Somers 1922 - 2010 Edith "Ginger" Somers was suddenly called home to her Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 2, at the age of 87. Her nickname, Ginger, was given to her by her brothers because of her naturally beautiful red hair. She was born on December 22, 1922 on a farm in Nekoma, North Dakota to parents Engebert and Caroline Gronhovd, Norwegian immigrants. After high school she attended college at the North Dakota State School of Science where she was elected Homecoming Queen in 1941. During World War II she served as a secretary at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. After the war, Ginger and her best friend decided to follow her brother to California, where he was stationed at Minter Field. It was in Bakersfield that she met the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Somers, an insurance agent from Berkeley, California. They soon married and moved to Shafter where they raised two children; a daughter, Leslie Lynn (Riccomini) and a son, Gary. They enjoyed nearly 25 years of marriage until Bob's untimely death at the age of 53 in 1974. Ginger was a devoted member of Fruitvale/RiverLakes Community Church for over 30 years and generously gave of her time to help various ministries at the church. Meaningful Bible teaching was a very special part of her life, especially Milt Cole's Primetimer's class. Ginger is survived by her daughter, Leslie Riccomini (Bakersfield); son, Gary Somers and wife Carroll (Shafter); and grandson, Steve Riccomini and wife Jennifer (Bakersfield); granddaughters, Chrissy and Andrea Somers (both of San Diego); and great grandchildren, Zachary Riccomini and Sara Riccomini (both of Bakersfield). Ginger will be greatly missed by all her family and many friends. There will be a Memorial Celebration at RiverLakes Community Church, 4301 Calloway Drive on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ministries of RiverLakes Church.
