Mary Parker Obituary

Mary Helen (Patterson) (Humphrey) Parker 1920 - 2010 Mary Helen (Patterson) (Humphrey) Parker was born to James and Blanche Patterson on August 4, 1920. She was followed by 7 sisters; Laverne, Virginia, Betty, Doris, Nancy, June and Bobbye. She had 3 children (Allen, Donna and Karol) by her first husband, Ray Humphrey. Her many occupations culminated in a career with Jamison Shelter Care where her favorite responsibility was taking care of the babies. Helen was a kind and loving person who delighted in helping others. She lighted the way where ever she went and was active in her church and community, serving meals on wheels into her 80's, in the small town of Ralston Oklahoma where she lived with her second husband, Darl Parker, following her retirement. The death of her husband, followed by a stroke, necessitated her relocation to Bakersfield to live; first with her family and later in the assisted living facility of Westchester Gardens where she was lovingly cared for by many care givers. Helen is survived by her children, Allen Humphrey (Betty), Donna Davis (Bill) and Karol Michel (Mickey); as well as her sisters, Virginia Sanders, Betty Cunningham (Curt), Doris McColgen (Jim), June Branch and Bobbye Trotter; 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Helen loved being with her family and enjoyed the chatter and laughter that abounded in that sphere. She loved a family reunion and that's where she has gone. Waiting for her will be those who passed before her; her husband, Darl Parker; mother and father; sisters, Laverne and Nancy and Ray Humphrey. She was an active Christian and worshiped God, who was first in her life, with all her heart and soul. A memorial service will be conducted by Pastor Larry Wood at Valley Baptist Church, on Saturday, December 11, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. www.bakersfield.com/obits

Aunt Helen brought so much love to this world with her stories, laughter, kindness for everyone. Her journey to Pomona early in life made a gateway for the rest of the Family to follow. My summers early in life in Bakersfield and her stories at the Reunions were treasured and she was a Grandmother and Mother to her immediate Family. She always had a kind word and will be miss by all of Us. Love you so much Aunt Helen

Aunt Helen, you were always loving and patiently indulgent with all of your nieces and nephews. You brought us pride by telling us so much about our family history. And you made us all laugh with your funny stories. We will miss you and always remember you with love in our hearts and smiles on our faces.

I loved the part where it said she liked to laugh and be with family. My last memories of her was when me and other family members were all together last spring. She sang and knew more words to old songs than the rest of us. She ate with gusto and was able to read small print without glasses. She was simply amazing! My parents didn't have a favorite among us eight girls but I think they always had a special feeling for their firstborn - their precious Helen. May God be with all my family as they're together this weekend to honor Helen's life.
