G. Ziemann Obituary

Bishop G. Patrick Ziemann 1941 - 2009 God called Bishop Pat home early after a short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on October 22, 2009, at Holy Trinity Monastery in St. David, Arizona. Bishop Pat was born on September 13, 1941 in Pasadena, CA to Helen and J. Howard Ziemann. He was the third of eight children. He attended Mayfield School, Sacred Heart School and St. Andrew School, all grade schools in the Pasadena-Altadena area. He completed 12 years of seminary studies for the priesthood attending Our Lady Queen of Angels Junior Seminary in Mission Hills, CA for six years and six years at St. John's Seminary in Camarillo, CA. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on April 29, 1967. His educational degrees included a B.A. Degree in Philosophy from St. John's Seminary College; a M.A. Degree in Religion from St. John's Seminary and a Masters in Education from Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles. He held state credentials in secondary teaching, administration and pupil personnel services. Pat was fluent in English and Spanish. Bishop Pat's priestly assignments were: St. Matthias Parish in Huntington Park as Associate Pastor from 1967 to 1971; Mater Dei High School, Santa Ana, as a teacher of Religion from 1971 to 1974 and at Our Lady Queen of Angels Seminary, Mission Hills, as Vice Rector, Dean of Studies, and teacher from 1974-1987. He was ordained to the Episcopacy on February 23, 1987 in Los Angeles and was an Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles and served the Santa Barbara- Ventura Region of the Archdiocese. Bishop Pat was appointed Bishop of Santa Rosa on July 14, 1992 where he served until July 1999. He resided at Holy Trinity Benedictine Monastery, St. David, AZ from 2000 until his passing. Bishop Pat was an Educator both in and outside the classroom. There was never a time he did not stop what he was doing to listen to a person's problem, say yes to a request to perform a baptism, wedding or funeral no matter where in the country the event was being held. His hands and heart were always open to anyone who needed help along life's road. Bishop Pat had few hobbies. He loved to go to the movies, watch the news on television to stay up on the current events. He loved being around family and friends. He loved to play little pranks on people. His laughter would light up the room. Bishop Pat the person has left this earth to go home but he will live in the hearts and minds of all those he came in contact with. Although we mourn his loss we honor him best by continuing to live as he has shown us. Anyone who had the good fortune of knowing Bishop Pat took a little bit of him away with them; be it a prayer life or service to others. Bishop Pat was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Joseph Scott ("Mr. Los Angeles") his wife Bertha; his paternal grandparents, Gus and Catherine Ziemann; his parents, Helen and Howard Ziemann; his sister, Ann Marie; and numerous aunts and uncles. He is survived by his brother, John; brother, Joe and wife Florence (Bill, Diane, Julie and husband Steve, and Amy and husband John); brother, Mike and wife Linda (Joe, Shawn, Kelly, Nicole, and Chris); sister, Kathleen Pesqueira and husband Al (Mike, Maureen, Scott, and Sean); brother, Tony and wife Peggy (Emily and Katie); brother, Pete (Chelsea and fiancé Bill). He is survived by many family members including cousins and great nieces and nephews and by his many friends. Bishop Pat spent many good years at Holy Trinity Monastery and has many friends from that community. The family appreciates the skilled and loving care that Bishop Pat received from hospice nurse Mary Ann and from his care nurse Mary and her volunteer crew of Watchful Angels. Bishop Pat was always available for his family and many friends. We could count on his presence at the many family gatherings. We all will miss his guidance and larger than life personality. Family and many, many others have been helped over the years of Pat's earthly journey and look forward to reuniting with him when our journeys are done. The family encourages donations be made to a favorite charity. Bishop Pat was particularly interested in fostering Holy Trinity Monastery and would want any donations that might be directed to them to be used for their various building programs and special projects. Those donations can be directed to Holy Trinity Monastery, P.O. 298, St. David, Arizona 85630 Attn: Father Henri Capdeville O.S.B. Celebrations of life of Bishop Pat will be held at a private family gathering. The family requests that messages of condolence be sent through www.BishopPat.com. God bless us all! Greenlawn Mortuary

Bishop Pat,
You were a friend, a mentor, a light in an often dark world. Your personal struggles have shown us the human face of God and, your rising above them, the enduring grace of Jesus. I can count on one hand the people who have changed my life and you are definately on that hand. Pray for us who still struggle in this world and I look forward to a big Bishop Pat hug when we meet again.

Bishop Pat (or Fr. Ziemann as I remember him) knew that now all of the students at the seminary we going to make it to priesthood, I didn't, but he knew how to nurture us. I remember him saying "If your religion doesn't meet your needs, you owe it to yourself to go out there and find one that does." Admittedly, I didn't remain Catholic, but those words stayed with me and have helped me be happy. I will continue to remember you and be happy.

Over the last 10 years or so, I have kept in touch with Bishop Pat, remembering him on his birthday and on various holidays with cards and notes. He was always so kind and appreciative, sending back a letter or note to thank me for never forgetting him and for always being a friend.

It is as his friend that I will miss him and will continue to pray for his eternal rest in the loving arms of God who calls him home.

My Prayers and thoughts are with the family and friends of Bishop Pat. Bishop Pat was such a major part of my life, especially in high school. I was blessed to have attended the S.A.W. Retreat (Signed and Annointed to Witness) retreat in high school, an even that changed my life for the better. Bishop Pat was on our retreat and was so honest and fun and willing to answer our questions. After the S.A.W. retreat I went on to serve in my parish as a teacher in the Confirmation Program for two years before heading off to college. Bishop Pat will forever have a special place in my heart as a man of faith. I am so thankful for his presence in my life and he is missed.

Bishop Pat was a gifted teacher, a true mentor, and a dear friend. May the angels lead you to paradise; may the martyrs come to welcome you and lead you to the holy city, the new and eternal Jerusalem. May choirs of angels welcome you and lead you to the bosom of Abraham; and where Lazarus is poor no longer may you find eternal rest.

So many great memories of you.
Camp Big deal with Dennis Santos, Youth Ministry meetings Mass and BBQ's at your house in Santa Barbara with the deanery youth ministers. Confirmation nights at the parish where you reminded the youth that Jesus played soccer in high school and that he felt everything they did, the papers you tossed into the air. The story about the tent, (earthen vessel) which was about a boy who was battling sickness and his eventual demise. The Big Deal Saturday youth retreats at various parishes and Middles. The way you would give your homilies and one of your most famous quotes. "If you stand for nothing, you fall for everything." I also remember the two week Summer camp for children and youth in Santa Paula that you put together with the seminarians from ventura county (Fr. Mike Sezzi) your priest secretary who accompanied you to parish confirmations, Sophie your secretary and finally your invitation to go work with you in Santa Rosa.

Thank you Bishop Ziemann for all of these wonderful experiences of Faith you shared. I have learned so much from you. I Love you very much! Pray for us Bishop Ziemann. Now you see your God our God Jesus face to face and now you can see how greatly you were loved by so many people. THANK YOU!

Dear Bishop Pat,
I somehow have this image of you entering the assembled angels and saints of heaven and flinging a whole stack of papers into their midst. I'm sure they were as startled as the folks at Back-to-School-Night when you did it to us, so many years ago. The effect was energizing, focusing and we could hardly wait to hear what this charismatic man of God had to share with us...delightful! You have gifted us with so very many strategies, insights, and techniques as we watched you in service of our teens. I worked with you on early SAW Retreats in Santa Barbara Region, and consider those days some the most precious in my life.

Thank you for the successes and the suffering, and may those of us still returning to the Father, take your story into our hearts and live with grace guiding our every decision. Blessings and joyful hearts to your family. With gratitude and loving memories.

For those of us in the Santa Barbara Region, who worked and laughed and talked and cried with our first Regional Bishop....this is such a sad loss. We will continue to quote Bishop Pat, tell stories about him and remember the fun, inspiring and amazing times we shared together. We are better people for having known Bishop Pat and we are grateful that God sent him to us. Blessings all over his family and friends at this time.

Dear, Dear,Bishop Pat,
I remember feeling so forgiven going to Reconcilation with you. You had a great affect on our Daughters who went to Santa Clara & St. Boniventure. Calling them to make their cars their chapels for prayer. I did. I am so sorry our Church can't be as forgiving as Jesus was and is.
You continue to be our Bishop.

Oh, Bishop Pat, I am so very sorry we have lost you so soon. Fond memories as classmates at Queen of Angels. New Years Eve in Pasadena. Your father gave me a Rose of Sharon cutting one of those times--and now they grow and bloom wherever we have lived. During our visits at the Monastery you were always so inspiring and uplifting. You will be sorely missed. In paradisum deducant te angeli, Patricie. And Joe,. and all of the family, please accept our sincere and deepest condolences.

Bishop Pat,
I will always remember you with love. For so many years you were a loyal and loving friend of our family, through marriages, baptisms and deaths. Don always said if he'd spent more time with you he would certainly have become Catholic. I believe you're both together now and he'll have all the time he needs with you.

Bishop Ziemann,

You sponsored me as a Seminarian for L.A. from Santa Barbara, your love, care and support for all of my years at St. John's were uplifting and very supportive. I have beautiful memories of "Camp Big Deal", "Search" and so many wonderful times we shared. The Holy Spirit brought forth so many extraordinary and life changing messages that you shared with so many of us. I wish you God Speed, and if in one moment you could experience the sincere and countless gifts you shared with others, for yourself, my prayers for you would be answered. Love to you and yours.

What an incredible blessing you have been in my life.
