Luther GOBBEL Obituary



Of Columbia MD passed away peacefully amongst his family on Saturday May 31 at the Gilchrist Hospice in Columbia. He was born on May 17, 1930 in Durham, N.C., to Luther L. and Marcia Russell Gobbel. He is survived by his wife of fifty five years Jean M. Gobbel, his sister Rachel Norment of Greensboro, N.C., son Robert, and daughter Katharine Gobbel, both of Columbia. He was a 1952 graduate of Duke University and a member of the Harvard Law School class of 1955. He practiced law from 1955 to 1965 for the U.S. Navy General Counsel's Office, 1955 to 1970 for General Dynamics in Rochester, N.Y., and Litton Industries in College Park, MD from 1970 to 1994. He was active in local civic and political affairs including the Harper's Choice Village Board, Howard County Charter Review Commission, and was Howard County Chairman for the gubernatorial campaigns of former governor Harry Hughes. He was a long time member and past president of the Rotary Club of Columbia. He enjoyed his retirement in Columbia and at his summer residence in Rockport, Massachusetts. A memorial service will be celebrated at Christian Temple, 5820 Edmondson Ave. in Catonsville on Saturday, June 14 at 2 p.m. A reception will immediately follow at a location to be announced. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Gilchrist Hospice Care, 5537 Twin Knolls Rd, Suite 434, Columbia, MD 21045.
