Dorothy Drew Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 23, 2011.
PRESQUE ISLE and BANGOR - Dorothy W. Drew passed away peacefully April 20, 2011, at Rowan Court, Barre, Vt., after a period of declining health, five days from her 89th birthday. She was born April 25, 1922, in Ashland, to the late Percy and Verna (Kneeland) Winslow. She moved to Presque Isle in her early years, where she was blessed with her sister, Marilyn's arrival in 1932. Dorothy attended Presque Isle schools and graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1939. She went on to study library science at Bates College, where she graduated in 1943. Later she graduated from Simmons in 1945. She then joined the U.S. Air Force and was instrumental in starting the first library at Presque Isle Air Force Base. Dorothy also was the head of Presque Isle Library from 1946 to 1948. On Oct. 16, 1948, she married Robert C. Drew, who predeceased her in September 1988. She resigned from the base in 1956 to begin her family. They moved to Bangor in 1959, where she resided on Silver Road for more than 40 years. There she made many lasting friendships. Dorothy was a member of All Souls Congregational Church for many years, Athena Club, Friends of Bangor Public Library and the No. 1 fan of the Bangor Daily News bowling team. She loved cats, book sales and ice cream. Dorothy loved spending time at Shin Pond with her extended family. She also spent many wonderful summer vacations on Prince Edward Island. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Marilyn Dean, in 2008; and her brother-in-law, Perley Dean, in 2007. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Heim; son-in-law, Douglas; grandson, Joseph; and great-grandchildren, Zaccari and Kailey, all of Vermont. She also leaves a niece, Deborah Coito; two nephews, William Dean and John Dean and families, all of Maine; and several cousins. Calling hours will be held 11 a.m. until the time of service noon Tuesday at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle. Interment will be immediately after at Fairmount Cemetery. Contributions in her memory may be made to Turner Memorial Library, 39 Second St., Presque Isle, ME 04769.

Susan,

Now, six weeks later, it is my turn to send my deepest sympathy to you and your family. You were very blessed to have such a fine mother. What many and wonderful memories I have of your Mom! I always enjoyed her visits at 146 Silver. She always had a great, warm smile, and a wonderful disposition. She was a great storyteller. I loved hearing many tales about something silly your cat did, and her great 'finds' at her yard sales. I know Mom missed her when she left for Vermont.

It's the end of an era for us, as time marches on. I thought, how odd, our mothers died so close in time. They were such great friends.

I am praying for you. Tuesday will be a tough day, I know. I would have been at the funeral, if it was possible.
