Hugh Hopkins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 23, 2011.
JONESPORT - Hugh Wines Hopkins, 94, passed away April 22, 2011, at a Machias health care facility. He was born Nov. 15, 1916, in Manorville, N.Y., the son of John B. Hopkins and Ione Raynor Hopkins. Hugh moved with his family to Maine from Long Island, N.Y., in his early teens, and continued his education in Jonesport. He later joined the Coast Guard in 1939, and was honorably discharged in 1945. After being involved in the service, he worked as a merchant mariner for Standard Oil in New Jersey. He eventually worked for the city of Bangor, where he retired in 1983. Hugh returned to Jonesport and built a small log cabin where he resided for many years. The final years of his life were spent at Machias Veterans Home, where he lived contentedly in the care of its excellent staff. Hugh was an avid gardener, hunter and fisherman. Hugh could also spin a good yarn with his eventful and exciting storytelling. He is survived by his brother, William Hopkins and wife, Gloria, of Holden; his niece, Patricia Hopkins Miller and husband, Paul, of Dedham; special cousin, Nina Aiston and husband, Phillip, of Milton, Vt.; special nieces, Beth Miller-Drake and her daughter, Kaitlin, of Dedham; niece, Lynne Miller Saucier and her husband, Jim, and son, Jonathan, of Brewer; and nephew, John Miller and his wife, Erika, and their children, Sadye, Colby, Jaycob and Baylee, of Dedham. He was predeceased by his parents; and his brother, John Hopkins and wife, Minerva. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, at Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Care, UNICEF or Pine Tree Society for Handicapped Children would be greatly appreciated. A service of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes. Condolences may be sent at www.bragdonkelley.com.

Hugh was a friend of my youth,as was his entire family. I wish them all well in this time of change by the passing of my friend.

Our Syympathy to Family of Hugh: We remember Hugh from the time we owned a cottage next to John & Mineva's. Many a day we would walk up to the "fox farm" just to say Hello Hugh. Each year, we kept up with family news by sending birthday and christmas cards to Hugh.

Wanted family to know that Phyllis died by cancer on Apr. 13, 2011. Now that the four are all together in heaven where we can reach them by prayer. Andy
