Oscar Rollins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 26, 2011.
BANGOR - Oscar Frank Rollins, 89, husband of the late Ruth (Knowles) Rollins, passed away peacefully April 24, 2011, at Maine Veterans Home, Bangor. He was born Nov. 14, 1922, son of Frank and Crystal (Marble) Rollins. Oscar served in the Army/Air Force during World War II and was involved in the use of radar to ensure the safety of his country. After release from the military, Oscar worked as a hand sewer for shoes for many years and then ended his working years working at Eastern Fine Paper as a color mixer for paper products. Oscar loved the outdoors. He was an avid gardener and fisherman. In his later years, his ability to engage in these activities was limited, but he always still had the best-edged driveway in the area. Oscar was a gentle, soft-spoken man, but he was treasured by all those who knew him. He always had a thank you for everyone who helped him. He is survived by his son, Darrell Rollins of Bangor; daughter, Lorraine and her husband, Bill Romano, of Hampden; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Leroy Rollins and his wife, Gene; and a great-grandson, Andrew. A special thanks is given to the Maine Veterans Home staff of E Unit who made the last year of Oscar's life comfortable. He loved everyone who helped him and truly felt at home. A service of remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with Pastor Larry Hodgkins and the Rev. Robert Henderson, of Good News Baptist Church, Bangor, officiating. Interment will be at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta, at a later date. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the service at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. Gifts in his memory may be sent to Maine Veterans Home Activity Fund, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401 or Ruth Rollins Scholarship Fund, care of Good News Baptist Church, P.O. Box 8464, Bangor, ME 04402-8464. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.

There is an empty place in my heart today, though he will always be in my heart and memeories. My prayers are for he and Ruth, now once again together. They have left a great legacy, in their children and grand-children. God Bless. Mark W. Clarksville, Tn.

Darrell, I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom and dad were such wonderful people. I remember how kind they both were, always willing to lend a hand and were wonderful friends of my gram Phyliss. He will be truly missed, as is your mom still. My thoughts and prayers are with you. ~Courtney Ryan Harris

So long to a wonderful friend and neighbor. Oscar would come over to our place and we would sit out side and have wonderful chats and he would say,'I'd better go home before Ruth has to come and take me home as she did not let him out of her sight for any length of time They were a wonderful couple and just great neighbors for a few years We miss them both and God is watching over them both and they are safe in his arms. God bless Darrel and his sister and we are so very sad for their loss.
