STEVEN LANGLAIS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 18, 2012.
NEW GLOUCESTER - It is with extreme sadness that the family of Steve Langlais, 51, proud and devoted father, kind and loving brother and friend, caring son, and skilled civil engineer, faced his premature death on the afternoon of April 14, 2012. His exuberance for his new kayaking interest could not compete with the changing water conditions. The family is very appreciative of his good friend, Tracy Quadro; the Coast Guard, Marine Patrol, and local rescue personnel of South Portland, Scarborough, Biddeford and Saco for their outstanding rescue work. Steve, youngest of four, was born to Gilberte Michaud Langlais and the late George L. Langlais, April 13, 1961, in Bangor. He graduated from Brewer High School in 1979, attended Syracuse University where he was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity, and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1984. In his first job with the U.S. Department of Transportation, he had the unique opportunity of sitting in on the planning of the Big Dig in Boston. His career placed him at Dufresne-Henry and most currently Stantec with airport projects in Massachusetts, Florida, Bahamas, Utah, Vancouver and Chile. Steve enjoyed golf, travel, hiking, many creative home projects, road trips, photography, regular platelet donations at the Red Cross, auctions, and was a longtime supporter of the Patriots Soccer Club in Gray. He was a model father who loved to provide his children with new hiking, travel and educational opportunities. His smile was broad and always ready to greet family and his many close friends. Steve married Deb Liberty, in 1991 and after their divorce in 2005, proudly co-parented Sam and Emma. Steve is survived by his children, Sam and Emma Liberty-Langlais; mother, Gil Langlais; sisters and their husbands, Roxanne and Harvey Wheeler, Pat and Reg Beaulieu, and Sandy Wardwell and Ed Curtis; nieces and their husbands, Beth and Stephen Taglieri, Katie and Andy Nesbitt, and Amy and Darren Bess; nephews, Luke Wardwell and Zach Beaulieu; a very special friend, Sabrina Murphy; numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. The family acknowledges the generosity of "Uncle" Mike Liberty. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at St. Gregory's Church, Gray. Family and friends may attend visitation 1-4 p.m. Friday at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sam and Emma Trust Fund at TD Bank, 23 Portland Road, Gray, ME 04039.

I am so saddened to have heard of Steve's passing and would like to extend my deepest sympathy and empathy to Steve's family, friends, and especially to Sam and Emma. From the time both Sam and Emma were born, I remember what a loving, caring and hands on father he was to them and he truly was a wonderful father. I didn't see him often over the years, but when I did - he always had a smile and was a true gentleman. Steve also made the best homemade cheesecakes- hands down - that I ever tasted ! Rest well Steve - Heaven now has yet another true angel. Mark Defazio Raymond, Maine.

I've known Steve for 20 years. I remember the first day I met him, and we hit it off immediately. He was a true and trusted friend to me all those years, and we helped each other through some very difficult times. One day I will find the right words that express the grief and sorrow and sadness that I feel. I'll always remember my friend, and I extend my deepest sympathy to his family.

I worked with Steve for 15 years at Dufresne-Henry and Stantec. Steve was always positive, and his trademark smile was known to all; I learned much from him and valued his friendship. The news of his passing was a great personal shock. My deepest sympathies to his family; you are all in my prayers.

I was very saddened to hear of Steve's passing. I didn't know Steve so well, but I remember as a kid joining in on some of the fun in the Linscott's backyard together with neighbordhood kids, including Walt and Jonathan Linscott, and Terry White. I remember Steve as a good and decent person, a gentleman.

God bless Steve, and the children and family he leaves behind. My sincere condolences.

Gil, Pat, Roxanne, Sandy and family - my deepest sympathies. I will forever remember the fun and caring person Steve was. From our days playing in the field behind our house as 7 year old boys to our drives from Brewer to Syracuse University he was a good friend. I know he has touched many in permanently positive ways and that serves as a testament to the richness of his soul. Media vita in morte sumus. Pax vobiscum my friend.

So many people, including yours truly, loved and cherished Steve Langlais for the joy, kindness, and consideration he so amply shared with those in his life. A part of me goes with him, but a bigger part of him stays behind, in a nearby place where his contagious smile and zest for life will continue to shine.
