Wilfred J. Cyr

MILLINOCKET - Wilfred J. Cyr, 85, passed away peacefully April 20, 2011, to be with his Lord, with family members by his side, at home. He was born Jan. 27, 1926, in St. Francis, son of Dennis and Alexina (Jandreau) Cyr. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He participated in action at Iwo Jima on Volcano Island in 1945. Wilfred belonged to Francis E. Elliott Post No. 4154, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post No. 80, Millinocket. Wilfred retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1990. He also worked as a firefighter for Millinocket Fire Department and as a constable for Millinocket Police Department. After his retirement he enjoyed a passion as a painter and continued this for a number of years. Wilfred was noted for his love of work, willingness to lend a helping hand, his practical jokes, his sense of humor and was often referred to by his friends as the wild Frenchman. He also enjoyed time with his best little buddy, Niko. Wilfred is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ann (Simond) Cyr of Millinocket; daughters, Susan E. (Cyr) Howard and husband, Ken, of Plymouth, Theresa A. Lane and husband, Steven, and Brenda J. Cyr and friend, Robert Whalen, both of Millinocket; sister-in-law, Rachael Cyr of Millinocket; several nieces and nephews. His granddaughters, Shelby and Taylor Lane of Millinocket were the apple of his eye. Wilfred was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Alphie, Renis and Robert Cyr; sister, Chantel Cyr; a half brother, Albine Cyr; and a half sister, Regina Taggette. Friends are invited to visit with the family 11 a.m.-1 p.m. April 30 at Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. with Deacon Dan Watson presiding. Spring interment with military honors will be at Millinocket Cemetery.
