Myron Ayers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 2, 2010.
CHARLOTTE - Myron Douglas Ayers, 83, died May 31, 2010, with his family by his side. He was born May 10, 1927, in Meddybemps, to Carlton and Edith Maude (Morang) Ayers. Doug enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and many other outdoor activities. He often told stories of his happy childhood growing up in the "old place," of hooking up farm calves to the bobsled, herding sheep on Mount Tom with his uncles and fishing in local brooks with his father. He graduated from Eastport High School and joined the Marines, where he served honorably until his discharge in August 1946. Doug married Doris Mary Moffitt, July 2, 1950, and worked for Bridges Brothers as a mechanic, before he began his long career as a lineman with New England Telephone. He retired in 1984 and was blessed to enjoy 13 wonderful years with Doris before she passed away. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He took his first commercial plane ride to Kansas last October to see his granddaughter and especially his great-granddaughter, Aislinn. They had a wonderful time sitting and reading stories, and sharing eggs and sausage at breakfast. In December 2009, he joined his daughter, Karen, for a yearlong adventure to Virginia, to help baby-sit another new great-grandchild, Parker. He loved to poke Parker, whom he nicknamed "Tarzan," with his walking stick and enjoyed their time together. It was here, with family that he became ill and shortly thereafter, passed away. He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Doris; an infant daughter, Brenda Jean; his sister, Gwendolyn Winchell; and his best friend and hunting buddy, Nelson Smith. Doug is survived by his children and their families: his three children, Wayne and Debra Ayers of Crawford, Karen Ayers of Charlotte and Dale and Christina Ayers of Claremont, N.H.; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Nichole and Paul Williams of Leavenworth, Kan., Joshua and Jessica Polland of Woodbridge, Va., Brittany Ayers of Norwalk, Conn., Courtney Ayers of Portland, Jordan Ayers of Crawford, Nathan and Katie Ayers of Martinsburg, Ohio, and Christopher, Joshua and Mariah Carroll of Claremont, N.H.; and two great-grandchildren, Aislinn Doris Williams of Leavenworth, Kan., and Parker Douglas Polland of Woodbridge, Va. He was also looking forward to the birth of his third great-grandchild, Bryn Marie Williams, in the coming weeks. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 4, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, with the Rev. Genise Knowlton officiating. Burial will be afterward at Round Pond Cemetery, Charlotte. Please join the family for a reception after the service at 195 Leighton Point Road, Pembroke. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine, 304 Hancock St., Suite 3F, Bangor, ME 04401.
