He received a Master’s Degree in Physics from Miami University and a Ph.D. in Physics from the Ohio State University.
For the following 27 years, Dr. Mason shared his knowledge of Physics with the students at Middle Tennessee State University. He also shared his knowledge as he traveled to high schools in the midstate area presenting Physics programs as a member of the Visiting Scientists Program.
His hobby was gardening. Many summers he maintained three vegetable gardens. For two summers, he curtailed his gardening in order to work with a group of scientists at NASA in Huntsville, AL.
Dr. Mason was an elder of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Murfreesboro. For many years, he enjoyed sharing the teaching of the Adult Workers’ Class on Sunday Morning. He was a longtime member of the Murfreesboro Exchange Club, a member of the Blue Raider Athletic Association, several Physics societies, and the Rutherford County Retired Teachers’ Association. Over the years, Dr. Mason and his wife enjoyed attending sports events at MTSU and for many years made an annual trip to attend a football game at his beloved Ohio State University.

Dr. Mason taught me physics in the fall of 1989, making the expanding universe seem very simple. He was an excellent teacher, very smart, incredibly kind, and highly regarded by all of his students. I remember his kindness even today in several conversations in which he encouraged me to go to graduate school. I am very sorry for your loss.

My uncle, Franklin Curtis Mason, Sr, was a brilliant, dedicatedly and decidedly Christian man; who was able to bring Christian love down to earth from the cosmos, which he studied, into the walking around kind of love. Certainly his brilliant mind understood at levels far deeper than mine, yet he was able to simplify and do small things in ways in which I can still feel that love. He was my hero, having played football in the Air Force; and he allowed me to wear his uniform hat for a few moments, when he came home to stay. He fished on the Garrison Fork with me, took me to Sunday School, and came home from college some weekends, just to see my sister and brothers and me, I thought. He was the big brother I did not have. He continued visiting at greater intervals, as distance from Beech Grove increased---but he visited regularly. After a few years he brought this beautiful lady to the house, to introduce her to us. Her name was Peggy Orr. She also was brilliant, and a dedicated Christian, as well. And their life together was a beautiful story, to watch unfold, as two wonderful cousins, their families, then grandchildren, and all the while continuing to live the Christian life, through extreme difficulties, and great joys. So he was a Beech Grove guy who could teach Physics at the highest level, doing internationally acclaimed research, yet grow tomatoes. That kind of fellow is hard to find. The only other guy I know like that is Jesus.
By example, Uncle Curtis and Aunt Peggy have helped me find my way down that path---although I am not the brilliant person, as they are; I am just a garden variety kind of marketing consultant, who belongs to Christ, nowadays, after having run sampling programs in venues away from The Lord. I am very grateful for Uncle Curtis, Aunt Peggy, and their significance within and to our family, and what they mean, personally, to my own life. May my Uncle Curtis sleep in Heavenly Peace.

Peggy, I never knew Curtis well, but he must have been a special guy. After all, you married him and raised a wonderful family. I wish you peace and the love from being surrounded by friends and family. Judy
