Willie David Shepard, “Shep”, was born in Holly Hill, SC, son of the late Reverend W. David Shepard, Jr., and Doretha Mazyck Shepard. While visiting his mother in Holly Hill, he departed this life on April 3, 2021.

Willie graduated from Holly Hill High School. He had a great love and interest in sports. He played basketball, baseball, and participated in track and field. He graduated from South Carolina State University with an undergraduate degree in Counselor Education.  He received advanced college credits from the University of South Carolina and Clemson University with only two courses short of completing his master’s degree.

At an early age, Willie joined Greater Target AME Church. Due to a job move, he transferred his membership to Miller Chapel AME Church in Newberry, SC where he served on the men’s choir, trustee board, a member of the Sons of Allen, and assumed church maintenance responsibilities beyond the call of duty.

During his professional career, for 3 years, he was employed as a probation officer at the Ladson Correction Center. He also served as a Counselor in the Newberry County School System for the remainder of his professional career.  He retired with high honors for his work in both the middle and high schools.  Willie enjoyed working with students and many of them as adults remember and continue to speak of him in a special way.

He is survived by his mother, Doretha M. Shepard; two sisters, Dr. Ann Shepard Winstead, Dr. Gloria S. McCall, and Dr. Melinda S. Kelly (Mike);  two nephews, Robert A. McFadden (Yasmin), and Michael Kelly, Jr.; two great nephews, Robert A.
