Raymond Mitchell Obituary

Raymond was a resident of Chesterfield County, VA and affectionately known as "Ray" to family and friends. He entered into eternal rest on Saturday, July 11, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. Raymond was born in Oceanside, California to Robert Mitchell, Sr. and Avis Mitchell on January 27, 1982. He was a world traveler as the youngest member of a military family.

Raymond graduated from Matoaca High School in 2000 where he was an avid soccer player and stand out student as a part of the National Honor Society and various other organizations. He then journeyed to Virginia State University for his secondary education. Raymond was very active in both the social and academic cultures of the University. He was a member of the Betterment of Brothers & Sisters, Incorporated. Raymond went on to earn a B.S. in Electronics Engineering Technology in 2004.

Upon graduating from college, Raymond was employed by Dominion Virginia Power where he had served as an INROADS intern. For the past 8 years, Raymond worked as an Electrical Engineer with Progressive Design Incorporated (PDI), in Chesterfield County, VA. During his illness, team PDI had been very supportive of Raymond and his family in many ways, especially in fundraising and organizing a team to participate in the Be The Match Walk/Run, in conjunction with the Be The Match Foundation.

Raymond was a devoted fan of the Washington Redskins, he enjoyed fishing, yard work, and being with family and friends. Raymond made it his mission to be an inspiration and mentor to younger relatives.

His spirit is carried on by his wife, Tia Jones-Mitchell; son, Jailen Jones of Chesterfield, VA; sister, Tara Heckstall (William) of Henrico, VA; brother, Robert Mitchell, Jr. of Henrico, VA; six aunts, Mary Bailey of Elizabeth, NJ; Betty James of Ahoskie, NC; Barbra Cooper (Robert) of La Plata, MD; Cynthia Gatling of Washington, DC; Cecelia Gatling of Landover, MD; and Theresa Gatling of Suitland, MD; six uncles, Alfred Washington (Joan) of Dinwiddie, VA; Anthony Washington (Vettera) of Norfolk, VA,; Kevin Washington of Norfolk, VA; Shelby Washington (Emma Lee) of Chesterfield, VA; Johnnie Holloman of Laurel, MD; and Clarence Gatling (Paulette) of Atlanta, GA; nephew, Aah'Dae Mitchell of Hopewell, VA; three great aunts, Joyce Hall of Petersburg, VA, Margaret Batts and Laura (June) Vincent both of Portsmouth, VA, and a host of other relatives, devoted friends, and colleagues.
Raymond will always be remembered for his kind heart, generous spirit, infectious laugh, and bright smile.

A special thank you goes out to the numerous doctors, nurses, and support staff of Virginia Commonwealth University Health System who were involved in the care of Raymond during his illness.

To Tia and the extended Mitchell Family:
It is a rare experience to reflect upon years of challenges and not be able to identify a single negative interaction with a man. We'll miss a laugh that never lost it's child-like joy. God loves you, and so do we. Goodbye and see you soon Brother RayRay.

I am at a loss for words. Raymond was one of the funniest, sincerest, sweetest people I have ever met. From high school to college, Raymond remained the same person; always speaking when we saw each on the yard, giving a hug, a smile. I don't understand why Raymond was taken from us so soon, we all may never understand, but one thing is certain; God certainly has one of the best angels on his team now. Enjoy paradise now Raymond! My sincerest condolences to his wife, Tia, his son and his family and friends.
