David Sootsman Obituary

David T. Sootsman East Leroy David T. Sootsman, 66, of East Leroy, passed away peacefully with his wife and daughter by his side Thursday, November 18, 2010. David was born January 24, 1944 in Bucyrus, OH to Elmer and Marjorie (Wasson) Sootsman. David graduated in 1962 from Lakeview High School and went on to attend college at Western Michigan University. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era, from 1966-1969, stationed in Alaska. David had a love for music. One regret is that he did not pursue a career in music after his time in the Army. Instead, he worked at the Federal Center for two years and then in 1971, began working for the State of Michigan. He was employed by MESC for nine years and then went to the Office of Services to the Aging, retiring in 1984. David enjoyed sailing boats and racing cars, and later in life, that passion developed into collecting model trains, flying RC planes and sailing model boats. He was currently the Commodore of the Battle Creek Model Yacht Club and past president of the Balsa Bee?s Model Airplane Club. Along with help from his wife, Karen, and daughter, Coleen, David published and distributed internationally the Sootsman N Scale Collector's Guide. David also had an interest in politics, serving on various boards and committees in Emmett Township and Leroy Township. He also volunteered his time working the elections and with emergency management. On October 21, 1978, David married the love of his life, Karen Buteau, who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Coleen (John) Sootsman-Eicher of Commerce Township; his granddaughter, Adelle Eicher; a sister, Mary Jane Quartermaine; his sister-in-law, Suzanne Buteau; and many of his favorite cats. At the request of the family, friends may call on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 from 4-7 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home. A memorial service to celebrate David's life will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 24 at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Robert G. Muirhead. Interment with full military honors will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the South West Michigan Humane Society or the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. Personal messages for the family may be placed at www.farleyestesdowdle.com.

Karen and Colleen, Although it is with great sadness we mourn the loss of Dave, the members of the Battle Creek Model Yacht Club would like to celebrate the memories and enjoyment Dave brought our Club. His leadership and fellowship will be missed.

Dear Karen and Colleen:
I'm sad for both of you at the loss of David. What a life you have had together. Dave was special to so many of us that tears have been flowing for his loss to us. But I have been smiling too because I know he is in heaven and feeling no pain, walking tall again, smiling that wonderful smile.
Karen - I know you were so excited to have David with you for as long as you did. When I think back over the years and of the laughing you two did I smile. You Karen are a role model for so many other wives. Don't ever give up on your loved one and give 100% of your love when that other person is "down". For the rest of the days of your life you will be able to look in that mirror on the wall and know - "I did it - I lived my wedding vows."
Colleen - one of my favorite childrens hymns is "This Little Light of Mine - I'm Going to Let It Shine."
Your father's light here on earth has passed on to heaven and he gave it to you to carry on. As the song says, "hide it under a basket? NO, I'm going to let it shine"
Love to both of you, so much love,
Gloria Maichele

I have known Dave for many years, and he was always the perfect gentleman. I especially enjoyed our conversations at the barber shop with Sarah and Annie. Many laughs there. Rest in peace my friend.
