Mr. Hugg meant so very much to me. I visited him at his home when he was 88;we had a wonderful visit. My husband and I attended his art show and I told him I would see him again...I will. I am so blessed to have had such a wonderful teacher/friend in my life. I am so sorry for your loss. I am just now learning of his death through a FB page for South Park Greenies or I would have been at his funeral. Much love to you, Pam Clark Dunivant

Mr. Hugg was a great art teacher at South Park High School. It was through his inspiration that I was encouraged to "create". I've been creating art in one way or another ever since. SPHS '67

Herman was such an amazing man. I only got to know him in the last few years, but I always enjoyed our visits and his phone calls. Even though he was in his nineties, his creative mind never rested and he always inspired me to see the possible and "Ask why not". I will miss uncle Shorty's witty stories so much! I'm so proud to be related to him. He always embraced and encouraged my quirky artsy ways. A master artist in my book, one of the greatest! I'm really sad he's gone.

Herman, "Shorty" to me, was the last of the four Hugg brothers and their sister. They were all very special people. When a man like him is gone the world looses someone that can never be replaced. He has had a big impact on all our lives and we will miss him.

Mr. Hugg was such an inspriration to me during my years at South Park! Wish we had more teachers like him today. He opened my eyes to so much in art and life! You may have left this Earth but you are most surely coloring the Heavens in your most special way!

Uncle "Shortie" I well remember you always as the sweet, kind and gentle uncle with the weird and wonderful strange sculptures in your yard. I will always remember the old coffee table you made the sat in my Mom and Dad's living room and the praying hands of our Lord that you sculpted for our front yard. You live in our memories for now but with God for forever!

Just learned of Mr. Hugg's passing. I greatly admired him as a student. God gives some people a gift of creating that lives well beyond their years in the earth. Mr. Hugg's reach extends through several generations by those he taught.

May you rest in glorius peace Mr. Hugg. Your memory of all memories of my high school days at South Park will stand out high above the rest. For you took the time to pull the shyness out of a girl standing on the sidelines and make an artist out of her. Not with just paints and inks but with seeing the world through those "rose colored glasses" of yours. I knew Mr. Hugg when he was not fighting for his country, but fighting for what he believed in. I knew Mr. Hugg when his classroom was his yard, not in a building. I knew Mr. Hugg when his body was old, but his mind was young. Another of the Greatest Generation has slipped through the grasp of this life. He will be missed. Thank you for the lessons.

Herman, or Uncle Shorty as the family called him, was a great uncle and a wonderful human being. As children we looked forward to Herman, Mike, Mark, and Minnie Beth's visit, it was always fun. He took an interest in what each of us were doing and this continued after we grew up. He would occasionally call to see how his “sister's children were doing” and he would brag about Mike, who he was especially proud of, or about his grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. It was fascinating listening to his stories and his take on the politics of the day. He had a unique view of the world that was fun to hear about. The world is diminished with his passing and he will be missed.

Herman had a truly caring and kind personality. The first time I met him he told me, "My name is Hugg because I like to hug people who are part of my life." He be miss and admired by many.

William Faulkner. Herman Hugg was not only an admirer of this quotation, but a perfect example of what I believe Faulkner meant. I consider myself very fortunate to not only have been a High School student of Mr. Hugg's, but also to have known him on a personal level. He had a lot to offer the world..and he offered a lot indeed. He also taught us to seek and find the beauty in the smallest of things. Herman Hugg's influence will live on and on, and so shall his spirit.

Wonderful memories of having senior Art Class from Mr. Hugg. Does anyone remember the Finnian' Rainbow production thst was put on in I think 1967 or 68. Remember helping to paint the props for that wonderful production. May Mr. Hugg rest in peace. He influenced so many.

My uncle Herman had a profound influence on my life. He prompted me toward higher education and gave me an appreciation of the beauty of all of nature around us. I will miss him dearly. His phone calls. He, more than anyone in the family, stayed in touch and encouraged us to stay in tourch with our relatives. I will miss his enthusiasm and zest for life and his sense of humor. He was a very special person and a very best friends.

My heart is broken. I so admire Herman for his creativity, his intelligence, his charming personality. I never spent enough time with him, but every visit with my artful friend is an event I will never forget. He was a great encourager to me in my own work as an artist and art teacher. My life is changed for having him in it, and my world is a little less joyful, now, without him. Vincent Van Gogh said, "There is nothing more truly artistic than to love others." I am so thankful that a human with a great art spirit lives on through his work and the love he has shown for others! My deepest condolences to his family.
