John Godwin

John C. Godwin, 95, of Lebanon, Ill., born May 3, 1919, in Coal City, Ill., died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Ill.

He was a member of 1st United Methodist Church, Lebanon, Ill., where he taught adult Sunday school, was on the board of trustees, and was instrumental in several church repair projects. He was a member of Lebanon Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite in Belleville, Ill. He taught at West Virginia Wesleyan College until returning to Scott Air Force Base during the Korean Conflict, he then taught at McKendree College, where he was director of night school and an associate professor for several years, then at the Air Force Film Library in St. Louis, Mo., and was the Base Education Officer at Scott Air Force Base for several years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice "Bea", nee Attey, Godwin, whom he married Sept. 29, 1944, in Belleville, Ill.; parents, the Rev. Thomas George and Lucille, nee Hendrix, Godwin; and a sister, Martha Roberts.

Surviving are two children, Mark (Nedre) Godwin of Lebanon, Ill., Margaret Bergmark of Lebanon, Ill.; two grandchildren, Benjamin (Nina) Bergmark of Ft. Lewis, Wash., Andrew Bergmark of Lebanon, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to 1st United Methodist Church, Lebanon, Ill.

Visitation: Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, at 1st United Methodist Church, Lebanon, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, at the Church with Rev. Peter Wehrly, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at College Hill Cemetery, Lebanon, Ill.
