Matthew Lootens Obituary

Former Whatcom County resident, Matthew C. Lootens, age 49, died unexpectedly Monday, January 24, 2011 at his home in Bow, WA. He was born January 28, 1961 in Bellingham to Gustaf and Marlene (McGarva) Lootens, and attended Nooksack schools. An outdoorsman at heart, Matthew loved hunting, fishing and was employed as a logger. He was known for his creative mechanical abilities and was a collector of treasures. Tara, Taz and Tangy were his beloved American Bull Dogs. Matt married Tammy Hanowell in 1982 and following a divorce they remained friends. He later married and divorced Julie Pennio and they also remained friends. Preceded in death by his mother, Marlene Lootens; brother, Mark and sister, Holly; Matt is survived by his son, Blake (Bethany) Lootens and their son Liam of Nooksack; daughter Brooke Lootens and her daughter Avery Corn of Sumas; step-children Jacob (Ashley) Fletcher of Sumas and Susan Fletcher of Bow; father, Gustaf Lootens of Everson; brother John (Vicki) Lootens of Everson and sister, Debbie (Peter) Messner of 100 Mile House, B.C. and numerous relatives and friends throughout Washington who will mourn his passing. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, January 28, 11:00 am at Nooksack Cemetery with Pastor Carl Crouse officiating. A fellowship gathering will follow at Sumas American Legion Hall. Memorial donations are suggested to a charity of your choice. You are invited to share your memories and condolences in the online guest book at www.gilliesfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Lynden.
