Robert, John, and Elizabeth,

I am so sorry to hear of your mother’s passing – my family, and I will forever miss her.

I was given the honor of being her caregiver for almost three years, and those three years caused her and I to share many family stories. We shared many happy and sad thoughts, alike. I came to know each one of you, as her joyful thoughts of love and compassion for each one of you gleamed in her eyes, as she spoke with an extraordinary amount of motherly pride.

Robert, her first-born, though circumstances and distance separated the two of you, she always held you close to her heart; the love she had inside her when she spoke of you was like none other.

Elizabeth, her only daughter; never a mother spoke more highly of her daughter, than Jan did of you. She was so proud of your accomplishments when you made it through school and earned your RN. The day you told her, she was going to be a grandmother, she could not wait to share the news she had so longed to hear. Jan was so proud of Maicee – every time there was a new picture, she shared each one, – and her granddaughter meant the world to her. I often wondered where she got the nickname for you – Sunshine. That answered became clear each time she spoke to you, and I was there. It seemed like no matter how much pain she was in physically, talking to you made it all go away. Even though her days often were dreary, you brought together the reality of family and love – you were truly her Sunshine.

John, as your mom would call you, Sonny; your mother always looked forward to your visits. She always looked forward to your hugs – she said they always made her feel warm inside. She would say that you, John, can do just about anything you want. She believed in you. Your place in her heart was special – all of her children had their own special place, but you shared with her your love for bikes, and she was so proud of that. She loved each one of you so very much.

Jan never knew a friend, so it seemed – everyone was in some way related to her. Edward was her brother, one she loved dearly. Each person that came into her life she accepted as her own: brother, sister, niece, nephew, grandchild; it was difficult figuring out who was who at times. But, it didn’t matter – Jan truly was the only person I have ever known with a heart big enough to share with as many people who would accept and share her love.

I am honored and proud, yet sad – Jan came into my life, accepted me as one of her own, and now she has left an empty space that none other shall fill.

I love you, Jan – miss you very much. See you one day, on the other side.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Simpson
