Alexander Murray Obituary

Alexander "Alex" Murray died as he lived, with courage, dignity and resolve. On February 17, 2010, he was joyfully reunited in eternity with his beloved wife, June, and his favorite horse, Patchy. Alex was born in Helena, Montana, on September 26, 1917, youngest child of James and Theresa (Elsner) Murray. Growing up on 16 Mile Homestead, Alex was a true Montana cowboy who quickly learned how to ride, trap, fish and hunt. He worked in the Butte Copper Mines and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps to build bridges, carve trails and fight forest fires. Enlisting in the US Navy on Pearl Harbor Day, Alex served on a submarine tender in the South Pacific. After WWII, he settled in Vancouver, WA and was a plumber for the Portland School District until he retired. His storytelling was renowned and tales of early Butte days as well as hunting and fishing adventures enthralled his family and friends. Alex skillfully hand-tooled beautiful leather wallets, belts, purses, checkbook covers, and key cases which are treasured by the lucky recipients. His extravagant garden yielded a bounty of flowers, fruits and vegetables harvested, preserved and freely shared with all. His strawberry jam was a consistent blue ribbon winner at the Clark County Fair and his sourdough applesauce cake judged "the best". Flipping his famous sourdough pancakes gave him great joy and samples were eagerly awaited by his grandchildren. Alex loved the outdoors especially trail riding, camping, fishing and hunting. Elk Camp in the Blue Mountains was an annual destination which provided meat for the family table and an abundance of new stories each fall. He taught Hunter's Safety Courses so new hunters could learn to hunt safely and responsibly. For years, Alex volunteered as a Fire Fighter with Vancouver Fire District 6. He and June loved square dancing, playing cribbage, entertaining friends, trail riding and camping. They described their 37 years of marriage as "the best years of their lives". Alex was a loyal Seattle Mariners fan and a devoted sponsor of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the NRA and a lifetime member of the Washington State Grange. In 2003, he joined the Bellingham Central Lions Club and was awarded the President's Appreciation Award for his dedicated service. A member of First Congregational Church of Bellingham, UCC, Alex sat right behind the pastors every Sunday in what he called "Sinners Row". A generous friend, always ready to help, always enlivening any gathering with his stories and songs, Alex will be missed by his many friends at church, at the Lions Club, at the Parkway Chateau and at the Whatcom Creek fishing hole. We, his family, carry his amazing legacy with us each day. Children are Doug Fagerness, Cheryll Blair(David), Janet Storey(Morgan Little Tree), Marla Kay Morrow(Steve), Joan Murray, Jayne Hildebrand(Rick), Jeff Murray. Grandchildren are Jes Fagerness, Ellen Blair, John Blair, Kathryn Blair, Jay Blair, JoAnna Hensley(Dean), Crystal Plummer, Shelby Plummer, Joe Plummer, Paul Hildebrand, Danielle Hildebrand, Skyler Murray and Great Grandchildren, Stryker Plummer, Deanna Hensley. A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Alex Murray will be held Friday, March 19, at 2:00 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Bellingham, UCC, 2401 Cornwall Avenue, Bellingham, WA. Al was a gem in an often worrisome world. The stories and pictures of his adventures were always looked forward to. Sunday afternoons, and every holiday was spent with Al & June, and I called them grandma and grandpa. They welcomed my family with open arms: cooked for us, allowed me to stay over, and taught my mother and I canning and baking essentials. Al made such an impact on my mother that she named my brother Eric "Alexander" after Al. Al & June hold a dear place in my heart, and I will always remember them fondly.

I was so honored to be warmly received by Mr. Murray while visiting as a home care nurse--my first independent day of work after moving to Bellingham. He presented himself as just an "old miner from Butte, Montana". I was overjoyed to learn his roots and background as I too am from Butte, Montana and has so many experiences that patterned his first years in Butte. He gave me such a wonderful feeling that day, I won't ever forget his welcoming me to Bellingham! He was a wonderful soul and you will certainly miss him.

Al Murray was a very dear friend of my father (Shorty Cotton). They worked together for years and both retired as plumbers at Portland School District. They also, hunted together in the Blue Mountains and were very close friends. My father passed away 5 years ago this month and Al attended his funeral service here in Vancouver and stood up and said some very kind words about Dad. I am sorry to say that we won't be able to attend Al's service as we are "wintering" in Arizona. Otherwise, please know that we would be there! He was always a kind and gracious man in my eyes as I was growing up... almost like an uncle! My husband, Lynn, also worked with Al at the PSD although in different areas. He always enjoyed being around Al and has great memories of those working years. We pray for comfort for the family at this time of loss as you cling to your many memories more than ever!
Blessings... Linda (Cotton) Taylor

My family knew him as Al, he was always such a kind man. I do know how special his June was, he once told me that she would always be with him in his heart. Guess we go back a long way...I don't remember ever not knowing him. My father, Van Vanderhoef hunted with Al in the Blue Mts. He passed away in Oct. of 2000 and my mother Rose passed away just last September. So many memories come to mind like borrowing a snake to unclog a sink of toilet. Also remember Al and my father making lead weights for fishing...those two men sure did love to hunt and fish and they were darn good at it too. What great friends and even greater memories. We are so saddened by your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all...cherish those deep memories forever! Would love to have his recipe for the Apple Walnut Harvest cake, as I love to bake and it would give me something of his to keep.

What a man our dear Mr Murray! He will be greatly missed. He took time out to talk and teach and be a friend especially to our son Ty and for that I will always be grateful. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. From the early days of my life when he was boarding his beloved horses in our pasture, till the later days through his lively Christmas letters, he never failed to bring a smile to our faces.
Thank you God for Al Murray

It was my privilege to meet and become a friend of this wonderful man in 1981 when I was a new employee of the fire department. He generously shared with me the fruits, vegetables, and flowers grown at his Hazel Dell home. I looked forward each year to the report on his much anticipated hunting trip to the Blue Mountains. His recipe for Apple Walnut Harvest Cake is the best! Since his move to Bellingham Dean and I have enjoyed receiving his very entertaining yearly Christmas letter. I am so happy that he and his dearly loved June are together again.
