Fern Demaio Obituary

Fern DeMaio, age 81, of Bellingham, passed away on March 8, 2011. Her courageous battle with cancer ended peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on February 1, 1930, in Stockton, New York, to Donald and Harriet Thorp. She married Nicholas DeMaio on December 24, 1949. They retired in Bellingham in 1990. In addition to being a wonderful wife and mother, Fern worked for Sears Roebuck and Company for 24 years. Fern enjoyed playing bridge and socializing at the Village at Cordata with many friends and neighbors. She also enjoyed quilting, knitting, doing puzzles, shopping with her granddaughter, and most of all, spending time with her family. Fern was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Ted and Ed Thorp. She will be greatly missed by her husband of 61 years, Nicholas; daughters and sons-in-law, Nicki and Booth Fowler and Toni and Dennis Whitmyre; grandchildren, Christopher Sweet and wife Wendy, Matthew Sweet and wife Sharon, Whitney Whitmyre and fiancée Steven Auld, and Garrett and Harrison Whitmyre; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Nicholas, Casey and Cody Sweet; her brothers, Wally and Shirley Thorp and Max and Susan Thorp; and sister-in-law, Joanne Thorp; along with many aunts, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Whatcom Hospice of Bellingham. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 14, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Moles Greenacres Funeral Home with burial at Greenacres Memorial Park (Northwest and Axton). A reception will follow at the Village at Cordata Clubhouse. Dear Nick, Nickie, Toni and your family--We are so sad for all of you. You took such good care of Fern, & God will bless you for that. She fought so hard and never complained. We have so many special memories of family gatherings in Stockton, Cassadaga, California, Florida and Bellingham. Our prayers will be with you. She is with the Lord now, and He will comfort you.
