Hugh Gregory Obituary

Hugh McEwen Gregory, 65, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2011 in Bellingham, WA. He was born to Robert V. Gregory and Elizabeth (McEwen) Gregory on July 14, 1945 in Bellingham, the youngest of three children. Hugh graduated from Bellingham High School in 1963, and then attended Skagit Valley Junior College. In 1964, Hugh enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Japan. Upon completion of his tour of duty, he returned to Bellingham and in November 1968 was hired by Puget Sound Power and Light Co. (now Puget Sound Energy). It is here where he met his beloved Bonnie (McKay), where she was also employed. They were married in Bellingham on August 17, 1974, and the following spring they moved into their new home, where they have resided for the past 36 years and raised their two sons. In 2001, he was hired by Potelco Inc., a service provider for Puget Sound Energy, where he became Supervisor of Northern Division Engineers. He was selected 2010 Employee of the Year for the Northern Division of Potelco Inc. He gave freely and generously the gift of his time. While his sons were growing up, he enjoyed attending his son Shawn's baseball, basketball, and football games, and coaching Boys & Girls Club basketball. He supported his son Brian's interest in the violin and for the past eighteen years enjoyed attending all of his orchestra concerts. He was eager for every opportunity to spend time with his granddaughter, Jordan. He was introduced to the game of chess in high school and enjoyed the challenge the game provided him throughout his life. He played slow-pitch in earlier years, and was an avid fan of baseball and college football. He followed the Washington Huskies and Seattle Mariners his entire adult life. He took pride in his Scottish heritage. He loved music and working outside in his yard and gardens. He enjoyed travelling throughout the Pacific Northwest and Canada. He was a runner for many years and enjoyed running on the trails of Whatcom Falls Park and beyond, up until the time of his death. Hugh was grateful for the friendship of his co-workers at Potelco and Puget Sound Energy, and lifelong friends and neighbors. He was devoted to his family, and his family adored him. His beautiful smile and sense of humor will forever live in their hearts. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Margaret Gregory. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Bonnie; son Brian Gregory of Bellingham; son Shawn (Marcy) Gregory of Ferndale; granddaughter Jordan Gregory of Ferndale; mother-in-law Dorothy McKay of Bellingham; brother-in-law John McKay (Mi Hee) of Burlington; step-grandsons Tyler Occhiogrosso of Bellingham, and Ryan Occhiogrosso of Ferndale; and sister Janet (Robert) Landry of Durham, Maine. A Celebration of Hugh's Life will be held Tuesday, March 29, at 1:00 PM, at Greenacres-Moles Funeral Home, with the Reverend Marta Schellberg officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 PM, at Greenacres Memorial Park. You may share your thoughts and memories of Hugh in the online memorial guest book at www.molesfuneralhomes.com.

Shawn, Bonnie, and Brian: Just visiting Bellingham and saw this very sad news. What a terrific man Hugh was and will always be remembered as. And a terrific family he helped raise. My condolences go out to the entire family in this tough time of mourning.

Dear Bonnie and family,
I have been gone from PSE for many years now, but remember working with Hugh in the planning department in Bellinghan and Mt Vernon. There are no words to describe how saddened we are to hear of this good man's passing.
May God comfort you in the days to come.
Most sincerely,

Kristin Ray

Hugh was one of my best friends while growing up - starting together at Campus School. I recall spending sad hours with him the day JFK was assinated. The last time I saw Hugh he thanked me for telling him he should take up running. My mother was a close friend of his mother. Hugh will be missed. Pat O'Connor
