Manley Dorothy Obituary

Dorothy Belle Manley passed peacefully in Bellingham on March 28, 2011. She was born January 17, 1912, in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, to Floyd and Thora Clark. On April 2,1937, she married Winton Manley of Lake Samish. They enjoyed 71 years together before his death in 2008. She was also preceded in death by siblings Edith Fisher and Buddy Clark, and grandson Michael Chervenock. She is survived by daughters Maureen (Stephen) Ware of Bellingham, Mary (Tom) Johnson of Tacoma, and grandson James Chervenock of Bellingham. In 1916, after her father's career in vaudeville, she and her parents moved to her grandparent's farm in Erie PA. In 1918 the family moved into Bellingham where her father started Clark's Candy Company. Dorothy worked with her father dipping and packaging chocolates to sell at Bellingham's Public Market. After graduating Whatcom High School in 1930, she worked at the Mt. Baker and Grand theaters as an usherette. She managed the lunch program at Whatcom Middle School, where she became well known for her baking, especially cinnamon rolls. She loved the children who worked for her, often providing a safe haven for those who were being teased. For over 70 years she and her husband worshiped at Bellingham's First Congregational Church, where she was active in many church activities. She was deeply devoted to her family, and adored animals, especially cats. She was involved in Bluebird and Campfire Girls with her daughters. She was a wonderful cook, a flawless housekeeper, and loved to host family events. She will always be remembered for her great sense of humor. Our family thanks the caregivers at A Loving Heart Adult Family Home, where for the past three years they have provided loving and compassionate care to our mother, and to the Whatcom Hospice caregivers who comforted her in her final days. A memorial is scheduled for Monday, April 18th at 2:00 at the Bellingham's First Congregational Church at 2401 Cornwall Ave. in Bellingham. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Whatcom Hospice or the First Congregational Church Memorial Fund.
