Martin "mardo" Schueman

Martin Schueman Obituary

Martin "Mardo" K. Schueman was born in Wooddale, IL in 1949 to Vivian and Herbert Schueman. He spent the majority of his wonder years growing up in Florida and fondly reminisced about the warm weather, long-board surfing, and childhood friends from the Sunshine State. In his teen years he hitch-hiked across the country, exploring the U.S and attending rock concerts. In 1969 he met his future wife, Julie and the two would be intertwined for forty-two years. Mardo and Julie traveled to Arizona and Mexico throughout the first decade of their relationship. Their families called them gypsies, wondering when they would settle down. After going to Alaska as a crew member on board a commercial fishing vessel, Mardo fell in love with the ocean. He fished in the San Juan Islands during the industry's glory years. During this time, he and Julie lived on the wild beach of Semiahmoo before it was developed and until the birth of their daughter in 1982. M ardo and Julie settled on a salty piece of land in Custer, WA where they built their home together. As the house went up, Mardo worked along side friends, adding personal touches. He is remembered as someone who, like the things he built, was strong and sturdy. His knack for building translated from his professional work in oil refineries as a Senior Craft Insulator, a trade he practiced for over thirty years in various refineries across the west coast. The home he built for his family is where he wanted to spend his golden years, and he passed peacefully there, in his sleep on Friday, March 25, 2011. Mardo is lovingly survived by his wife and daughter, Julie and Kassondra Schueman; his sisters, Donna Powell and Leandra Matson; and his brother Douglas Benton; along with their children. I will always remember Marto as a really good guy. His quick wit and neat sense of humor were contagious and appreciated after long days on a purse seiner.
