Celia Wolsky

1908 - 2012 MANCHESTER CENTER, VT Celia Wolsky, 104, died peacefully on Sept. 21, 2012, at Equinox Terrace.

Celia was born to Abraham Schwartz and Jenny Sobel on July 5, 1908, in New York City. She was the eldest of four siblings, Ida Charney, Miriam Becker and Samuel Schwartz, all of whom predeceased her. Her husband, Mac Wolsky also predeceased her.

She is survived by her nieces, Jean Schwartz and her husband, John Coull, Julie Silberstein and her husband, Harvey, and Norma Dumont and her husband, Matthew, and nephew, Robin Becker. Also surviving her are grandnieces Charlotte Dumont, Dorothy Dumont, Mia Silberstein and grandnephews Jesse Coull, Jason Silberstein, Corey Silberstein and Jonathan Dumont and family.

Celia achieved her BA from City College of New York, followed by her MSW from Columbia University. She worked as a Geriatric Social Worker at Bronx Lebanon Hospital in New York City. She was a lifelong champion for workers and human rights. She maintained active connections with labor unions and fought tirelessly for fair working conditions and always maintained a progressive stance on rights and equality. She felt passionately about the right for workers to bargain collectively and was an active member of the New York City 1199 Union. She was an active participant in the civil rights movement and felt strongly that all people deserved to be treated with civility and respect. Celia was also a champion for maintaining high levels of care for the mentally ill and was a member of The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She loved classical music and opera.

Celia lived in New York City for 95 years and then moved to Amherst, Mass., to live closer to her niece Jean. Celia lived at Equinox Terrace in Manchester Center for the last 6 and a half years of her life. Celia's family wants to express deep gratitude to the aides and nursing staff of the Terrace for their love and dedication to her care and quality of her life.
