Bettie Armstrong Obituary

BENNINGTON -- Bettie L. Armstrong, 84, a resident of Route 7 in Pownal, died on Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

She was born on April 20, 1922, and was the daughter of Harold and Zylphia (Hulett) Hilliard. Bettie was a graduate from Bennington High School. She married the late Raymond Armstrong on Sept. 7, 1939. They moved to the Armstrong Farm in 1943.

Bettie retired from Bennington College in 1984, where she had been employed for over 25 years in the college post office and as a switchboard operator. She was an active member of the Pownal Senior Citizens, of which she served many years as an officer. She especially enjoyed taking trips with the group. Her interests were her family and home. Bettie enjoyed knitting, crossword puzzles, playing cards, and attending family get-togethers. For more than 25 years, she met with her neighbors each week for a “sewing circle.” She also enjoyed weekly luncheons with her family and friends at Jensen’s Restaurant in Bennington.

She is survived by her three sons and two daughters-in-law; Keith Armstrong of Pownal, Herbert and Judith Armstrong of Pownal and Donald and Donna Armstrong of Buskirk, N.Y. She leaves her 10 grandchildren, Penny Acree, Karen Smith, Gail DeLurey, Sarah McCart, Jackie Gilpin, Michael Armstrong, Jen Smith, Amy Cole, Jason Armstrong, and Tim Arrmstrong, and her 19 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she is predeceased by her four brothers; Harold, Jr. Randall, Leon and Kenneth, and her sister, Lois Hill. Bettie is also predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Barbara (Norcross) Armstrong.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 6, at 1 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., in Bennington with the Rev. Jerrod Hugenot, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bennington, officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Towslee Cemetery in Pownal. Dear Keith, Herbie and Donnie (Donnie, you were too young to remember me). I am sorry to hear about Aunt Bettie's death. I have so many good memories of family gatherings with the Hill and Hilliard families when my grandparents, Bertie and Martha Hilliard and Uncle Harold were alive. It's too bad that everyone is far apart and lives more separate lives now. My thoughts are with you at this time.
