John Henry Collins

1929 - 2015 PITTSFIELD Mr. John Henry Collins, age 86, of 37 Eleanor Rd., died Sunday morning, Oct. 18th, at the University of Conn. Medical Center in Farmington, CT, after a long illness. He was born in Saranac Lake, N.Y., July 21, 1929, the son of Dr. Charles H. and Cecelia T. (Collins) Collins. He was a graduate of Princeton, N.J. High School and was awarded his baccalaureate degree in 1950 from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952, he entered Officer Candidate School. Upon completion, he served as a veteran of the Korean War and was discharged in 1956 as a First Lieutenant . He began his employment career as a chemist for 15 years with Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick, N.J. In 1973, he came to Pittsfield to join General Systems as an engineer, traveling throughout the world for the company. He retired in 2000 with 27 years of service. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Elaine Glenn, of MD, with whom he would have celebrated their 60 wedding anniversary this coming Nov. 19th. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Daniel H. Collins and his wife, Susan, of Marshfield, MA., Matthew L. Collins of Pittsfield and Melrose, MA., his daughter, Susan E. and her husband, Michael DelGallo of Avon, CT, five grandchildren, Patrick H. Collins and his wife, Megan, Peter Collins and his wife, Amy, Meghan Collins, Thomas DelGallo and Kelly DelGallo, two great-grand-children, Grace Collins and Hunter H. Collins, with a third great-grandchild expected soon. The family would like to thank the staff at Arden Courts Memory Care Community of Avon, CT for their devoted care. He is predeceased by his one sibling, the late Jane Harrington of Enfield, CT. FUNERAL NOTICE: Collins, John Henry, age 86, of Pittsfield, died Sunday, Oct. 18th. Calling hours at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be THURSDAY from 4 to 7p.m. Funeral services will be held FRIDAY morning at 9:15a.m. from the funeral home followed with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10a.m. at St. Joseph's Church with the Rev. Msgr. Michael A. Shershanovich, pastor, officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Michael's Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America in care of the funeral home.
