WILLIAM WADDELL "BILL" FEATHERINGILL

FEATHERINGILL, WILLIAM WADDELL "BILL" William Waddell ("Bill") Featheringill died unexpectedly on December 9th. He was preceded in death by his parents Juanita Waddell and William Jefferson Featheringill and is survived by his wife Carolyn Burgess Featheringill; daughter Elizabeth Featheringill Pharo and son-in-law Andrew Bernard Ernest Pharo; three grandchildren William Featheringill Pharo, Margaret Burgess Pharo and Andrew Bernard Ernest Pharo, Jr.; by his brother Dr. John Phillip Kemper Featheringill and sister-in-law, Regina Owens Featheringill; a nephew John Phillip Kemper Featheringill, Jr.; and three nieces Jennifer Elizabeth Featheringill, Julia Erin Featheringill and Meredith Owens Featheringill. He was a graduate of Ramsay High School and a cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University with a degree in mechanical engineering. At both institutions, he served as student government president and was a member of the football team. Additionally, at Vanderbilt, he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order, Omicron Delta Kappa and elected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. He served two years with the U. S. Navy SEABEES in Okinawa, California and Vietnam. After his Navy duty, he continued his education at Columbia University, receiving his law degree in 1969 and his M.B.A in 1970. He then began his career in Birmingham in health care and health-care related industries and was instrumental in the development of Medical Towers, Brookwood Hospital and Medical Center East. In 1973, he co-founded Private Capital Corporation in Birmingham. As president of the company, he established and grew a number of successful companies, primarily in the areas of healthcare, biotechnology, information technology and management systems. Included among those are Complete Health, then the largest HMO in Alabama, now part of United Healthcare, and Macess Corporation, now part of SunGard Data Systems. Most recently, he served as chairman of SuccessEHS, Inc. and Momentum Business Solutions, Inc. and was a director of Southern Research Institute. Formerly, he served on the boards of Altec Industries, Inc., BioCryst Pharmaceuticals and Citation Corporation. Among the awards Mr. Featheringill received were CIO Magazine's Enterprise Integration Award, the first Investor of the Year Award presented by the Birmingham Venture Club, and two of his companies received the John S. Jemison, Jr., Venture Award given by the Birmingham Venture Club for the most outstanding venture-backed company. In 2000, he was named the Distinguished Alumnus for the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering. A member of the Vanderbilt University Board of Trust, he formerly served as chairman of the athletic committee of the Board and on the executive committee of the Board. In the Birmingham community, he was a member of the Samford University Board of Overseers, the Executive Committee of the Campaign for UAB, the Board of Directors of the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Birmingham Rotary Club, and chairman of the board of The Featheringill Foundation. He was a member of Independent Presbyterian Church, having served on the board of the Church's ministry, Kirkwood-by-the-River. He was also a member of Mountain Brook Club, the Summit Club, The Club and the Birthday Boys, a group of friends born in 1942 who celebrated their joint birthdays at five-year intervals beginning in the year they became fifty years old. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 13th, at 2:00 p.m. at Independent Presbyterian Church, 3100 Highland Avenue, with visitation beforehand from noon until 2:00 p.m. in the Church's Great Hall. Pallbearers include a number of people who began their business careers in association with Bill Featheringill. The surviving members of the Birthday Boys will serve as honorary pallbearers. Memorials in honor of Mr. Featheringill may be made to Independent Presbyterian Church, the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering (address: PMB 407727, 2301 Vanderbilt Place, Nashville, TN 37203), or to a favorite charity.
