Susan Thomas Obituary

March 13, 1930 - January 29, 2017 Susan "Suzy" Eleanor Thomas, age 86, of Birmingham, AL passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2017 after a long illness. Born in Akron Ohio on March 13, 1930, she was the daughter of Leonard Anthony Cistone and Caroline Chase Cistone. Susan is preceded in death by her beloved late husband Dr. Henry Duke Thomas, her parents, sister Ann Marie Massiello and brother Peter Louis Cistone. Suzy was a loving and dedicated mother to Carolynn Joyce Thomas Jones, Paul Chase Thomas, Robert Duncan (Lee) Thomas, Jeffery Peter (Susanne) Thomas, and Margaret Ann Thomas; her grandchildren Roy Walter Scholl, IV, Katharine Anne Preston-Thomas Jones, Rachael Lee Thomas, Molly Sinclair Thomas, Peter Treutlen Thomas, William Henry Thomas, Ann Frances Thomas, Adam Anthony Thomas, Alexander Henry DeGroote, Elianna Carmen DeGroote, Sarah Amanda Jones, William Vannoy (Lauren) Jones, and Anna Jones (Michael) Babin; her great grandchildren Iliana Wise Scholl and Lukas Walter Scholl, and many family members and friends. Suzy graduated from St. Thomas Hospital School of Nursing, Akron, OH in 1951 and practiced as a pediatric nurse before raising her five children. She was an avid gardener and flower designer. As a long-term member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, she served on the flower guild, bereavement committee, and ESL ministries. She was also a long-term member of the Cherokee Rose Garden Club. She was best known for her hospitality and gourmet culinary passions. She particularly enjoyed creating feasts for large family gatherings where all were welcome. A memorial service will be held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on Monday, February 6th at 11 AM, with a visitation after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman, Alabama, St. Francis Xavier School or the charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank Vicki Anderson, RN and the caring staff of Comfort Care Hospice.

Suzy was an amazing woman who leaves a beautiful legacy. My heartfelt condolences go out to each family member. I wish you courage to face the days ahead and peace and comfort as you hold loving memories forever in your hearts. What an honor and joy it was to have been welcomed into her home, for visits and family feasts. Suzy, I love you, was honored to be part of your extended family, will always cherish the memories, and will miss you greatly.
