Harriet Maloof Obituary

July 5, 1932 - Nov 17, 2015 Harriet Durham Maloof left us November 17, 2015, after a short illness. She was the daughter of Henry Myron Durham and Harriet Elizabeth Davis and was born in Marietta, Georgia. She grew up in Marietta and Charlotte, North Carolina, and graduated from high school in Marietta. She went on to graduate from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, with a degree in music. She was an accomplished pianist. Harriet then became an elementary school teacher in Atlanta, Georgia, and Jefferson County, Alabama, school systems and taught for years. Harriet was extremely active in civic and other activities too numerous to list here. Among others she was on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Men's Hall of Fame and served as secretary for years; member Birmingham Women's Committee of One Hundred; President, Jefferson County Medical Society Auxiliary; member Daughters of the American Revolution; chairman of an Alabama Symphony Decorator's Showhouse; was very active in the American Cancer Society, from which she received an award; was a member of the Bibs book club and member of the Yellowhammer and Cherokee garden clubs; was a member of the Antiquarians; was a member of Searchers at Saint Luke's Episcopal Church and also served on the vestry; was a member of the Ballerina Club; was president of the Episcopal Church Women; belonged to the Vestavia Country Club. She lost her beloved daughter, Elizabeth, to lymphoma in 1991. She is survived by her husband, Dr. John A. Maloof Jr., son, Dr. John A. Maloof III (Kristine), grandchildren Amanda (Sergio) Martinez, Alison, Abigail, and Jake. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Saint Luke's Episcopal church or your favorite charity.

Harriet was such an inspiration to me in so many ways. She thought of the Mad Hatters' to honor her beautiful daughter. The has raised so much money for cancer. Such a fun way to support women and the challenges we face as mothers, daughters, and wives.
