Dorothy Bottjer Obituary

FLAT ROCK-In honor of what would have been her 84th birthday today, the niece and nephew of Dorothy Bottjer pause to celebrate her life. Dorothy was the first member of her family to be born in the United States; her German parents George and Katharine had immigrated to the US in the early 1900's. She spent her childhood in New York City, in Hemet, California, summers in Barryville, NY, and on Long Island in New York. She was the first member of her family to attend college, graduating magna cum laude with a B.A. degree in English from Heidelberg College (Tiffin, Ohio) in 1951. In mid-life she diversified her training by obtaining an A.S. degree in Computer Science from Sacred Heart University in Connecticut in 1985. Dorothy worked the majority of her career as an executive secretary and as a legal secretary at the corporate offices of General Electric, first in New York and later in Connecticut. She moved to Henderson County during her retirement to be closer to her brother (the late William Bottjer of Henderson County).
Dorothy was extremely well read on numerous subjects. She displayed talent in several artistic pursuits, including playing her harpsichord, quilting, drawing, and pastiche painting. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
Her passing on April 12th was a loss to her extended family (Carol Bottjer and Mark Bottjer of New Mexico). She will be interred in her parents' plot on Long Island, NY. In honor of her love of reading, any friends who wish to make a donation in her memory should please contact the Friends of the Henderson County Public Library.
