DONALD WINTER Obituary

WINTER, Donald F. Boston lawyer and civic leader, formerly of Boston, Massachusetts and Provincetown, Massachusetts and currently a resident of Hanover, New Hampshire and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, died as the result of a fall at his house in San Miguel on April 5, 2014. He was 72 years old. Mr. Winter was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, in 1941 and grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey. He graduated from Harvard College cum laude in 1963 and Harvard Law School in 1966, upon which he joined the prominent Boston law firm of Palmer & Dodge. Mr. Winter specialized in municipal law and tax-exempt financing and was widely regarded as the dean of non-profit financing in New England. He helped provide financing for colleges, hospitals, health maintenance organizations, schools for the handicapped and cultural institutions throughout the region. Mr. Winters lifelong interest in art and architecture led him to serve for 13 years as a member of the Back Bay Architectural Commission in Boston, ten of those years as its Chairman. He also served in various capacities supporting many other New England cultural institutions, including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Boston Preservation Alliance, the Monserrat School of Art, the Boston Center for the Arts and the Boston Lyric Opera. The most notable of Mr. Winters many charitable activities was the Boston Ballet Company, where he served on the Board of Directors for over 30 years. During his years of service to the Boston Ballet, he acted at times as Vice Chairman, Secretary, member of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Nominating Committee. Mr. Winter also served as legal counsel to the Ballet and was instrumental in helping it develop its home in Bostons South End. Winter was predeceased by his spouse, Richard DiFrummolo, and is survived by his three sons: Andrew of Hanover, New Hampshire, Matthew of Petaluma, California and Anthony of Boston, Massachusetts, his ten grandchildren, and his brother Thomas, sister-in-law and two nieces of Washington, DC. A memorial service for Mr. Winter will be held on Sat, May 3rd at the Church of the Advent in Boston, Massachusetts at 4 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Feed the Hungry San Miguel, Inc. (www.feedthehungrysma.org)

Only one man in the world could exude dignity and elegance while wearing striped satin pants... the F in Donald F. Winter surely stood for fun... if Donald was in the room, you were laughing... we will miss your humor and your joie de vivre... we will miss your kindness and your loving and generous heart... a light went out in San Miguel de Allende, the Heavens are brighter for it... too soon... too sudden... rest easy dear friend you did far more than your fair share to make this world a better place...
