I found out about Joe's passing only at Arisia. He had such a funny, wry sense of humor, and so bright--such a loss. Cindy, deep sympathy to you and to the whole family.

Though it was many years ago, Joe and I enjoyed great conversation and humor. I admired his commitment and vision for empowering blind people through technology, which was expressed both in his work for state government and as an author. I remember him fondly and will miss him! My condolences go to Cyndi and family.

Cindy and Family,

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of Joe.

I worked for Joe from 1997 to 1998 in the technology department of the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind, MCB. This was my first real job out of college, when the agency was on Kingston Street.

Earlier in the 90's, as did many, I also followed Joe's pioneering work on assistive technology.

Joe was a supportive colleague and friend to me then and now. I remember fondly the time you chartered a yacht on Boston Harbor for Joe's birthday.

Massachusetts is a pioneering state when it comes to public policy on accessibility and inclusion of people with disabilities, and Joe was a trailblazer on accessibility even before the word went mainstream.

Joe and family are in our prayers and he will be missed.

Cindy and Sarah, I don't think we have ever met but I had the great pleasure and honor of knowing and working with Joe for the last 20 years. My father was a Director of Rehab in Worcester during the 60's and 70's. He was also blind which lead me to learn about some of the technology being developed to help people access computers. In the 90's, when I started working with Ted Henter's company that developed JAWS, the screen reader Joe used, I met Joe during my travels. My dad who still had connections within the Mass Commission had heard about Joe as well and he was very pleased hear about my visits with him. Over the years, I've met with many people that work for state agencies and serve people who are blind. Few have demonstrated the compassion and concern about helping people succeed, as did Joe. During my visits to his office, he would often get a call or two at his desk. More often then not, it would be from a client trying to use a computer or something and Joe would be the life line they turned to with their questions. He would excuse himself from our meeting for a few minutes and solve their issue, without missing a beat. Then, after the call, he would complain a little, and answer the next call with all the compassion he showed on the first.

He was a good man and a mentor to so many people I'm sure. He was a good friend and will be missed. God Bless your family.

Cindy and Sarah,

I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. He was a friend and a teacher to me. I appreciate so much the time he took to teach me about adaptive technology and be a mentor. I won't ever forget it. We had fun having political arguments. He was one of the smartest people I knew. I hope to see you to convey my sympathies in person this week.

Cindy and Sarah,

I am so sorry to hear about Joe's passing. He was a friend and a teacher to me. He was the person who taught me about adaptive technology and how to do it. I won't ever forget him. He had a great sense of humor and we disagreed about so many political issues so it was fun to argue with him. I will see you at the service, and talk with you in person.
