ALORIE PARKHILL Obituary

PARKHILL, Alorie Boyle Alorie died at the age of 75 on May 23, 2017 surrounded by family following injuries sustained in a May 19th auto accident. A resident of Sudbury, MA for 48 years, Alorie was born on May 2, 1942 in Boston, MA, Beloved wife of Craig Walter Parkhill. Devoted mother of Rebecca Crowley Parkhill and Paul Boyle Parkhill, mother-in-law of Robert J. Willet and Helen S. Kapstein. Adored grandmother of Oliver Parkhill Willett, Daphne Kapstein Parkhill, Luka Dunlap Willett and Angus Kapstein Parkhill. She was predeceased by brothers Paul Boyle Jr., Frederick Dunlap Hickler and Roger Baldwin Hickler and sisters Margaret Boyle and Cecily Hickler Gill. A 1963 graduate of Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Alorie also earned a Master's degree in English from Simmons College in 1972. Alorie taught English and Theatre at the Cambridge School of Weston from 1963 to 2005 where she was also a dorm parent, head of the English Department and for sixteen years served as Assistant Head. In 1972, Alorie co-founded the Temple Beth Shalom Nursery School in Framingham, which is still operating today. A life-long Unitarian Universalist, Alorie was an active member of the First Parish Church of Sudbury where she wrote and directed thirteen nationally-recognized plays for UU children, co-directed the religious education program for several years and sang in the choir for many more. Alorie co-wrote the book "Doing Plays With Kids" with Mary Ann Moore on the process of producing plays in churches. A love of music led her to co-found several folk music groups including Mustardseed and Redwood. Upon retirement, Alorie taught classes at Brandeis Osher Life-Long Learning Institute and subsequently co-founded Life-Long Learning: An Independent Collaborative, where she served as curriculum committee chair and board member. She taught classes on subjects such as Buddhism, Feminism and the works of Toni Morrison. Alorie loved gardening, spending time at the family compound in Maine and was very active in local and national politics. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 24th at 2 PM at the First Parish Church, 321 Concord Avenue, Sudbury, with a reception immediately following in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alorie Parkhill Endowed Fund for Teacher Mentoring and Training at the Cambridge School of Weston, Georgian Road, Weston, MA 02493. I was one of her first students at CSW (class '71). She was learning how to be a teacher and as we shared our growth with her, she shared her growth with us.
She was a great teacher as she never stopped learning and growing. She was caring and sensitive, but also challenged you to do more that you thought you could do. She dealt well with a class of different strengths and skills, to make sure everybody had a place and felt safe to contribute.
thank you

Alorie, We started at CSW the same year. You were only 5 years older than I, but were already a teacher, mentor, role model and friend. I remember theatre there, with Witney Haley, and you. I remember Maine, summer weeks on the lake with the whole Hickler/Gill clan, feeling like part of the family. I remember re-connecting at CSW reunions, 25th, 35th, 40th, 50th, as if little time had passed. You were always Alorie; accepting, loving, strong, supportive, vibrant. Your loss leaves a hole in hundreds of hearts.
With love, and loving thoughts for all of your family, and extended family,
Martha Castillo, CSW '66
