ANTHONY J. BIBBO

1934 - 2018

BIBBO, Anthony J. "Tony" Age 84, a longtime resident of Wellesley, passed away peacefully on August 29 with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of the late Barbara F. Bilbo. "Tony" was born at Newton Wellesley Hospital on July 26, 1934, a son of the late Joseph Bibbo and Donata Bibbo of Newton. He lived in Newton until 1965 when he moved his family to Wellesley. He is survived by his Son, Joseph Bibbo of Pepperell and his wife Susan and three granddaughters, Megan, Molly, and Meridith, and his Daughter, Donna Mastrangelo and husband Frank and grandchildren, Cailey and Anthony Joseph (A.J.). In addition, he is survived by his sisters, Lucy Jordan of Lexington, Pauline Leonard of Buzzards Bay and his twin brother Pat Bibbo of Marblehead, as well as a niece and several nephews. Tony was educated at the Boston University School of Management as well as Masters in Social Work also at Boston University. He graduated from Newton High School in 1953 and was class president. He served in the US Army from 1958-1960 where he attended the U.S. Army Artillery Air Defense School at Ft. Bliss, Texas. In his position he served as the Ft. Bliss Troop Information Officer and was Officer in Charge of Ft. Bliss News, where it was recognized as the top 4th Army Newspaper. Tony's career started as the Program Director of the Columbia Point Center in 1957, Dorchester House Program Director in 1920, and then as Executive Director of the Newton Community Service Centers from 1962 to 2005. He founded the Foundation for Racial, Ethnic, & Religious Harmony in 2005 at which he served up to his passing. He served in many social service organizations, including: Board of Directors – National Network of Social Work Managers; Treasurer: Board of Directors – Institute for National Network of Social Work Managers; Academy of Certified Social Work Managers; National Association of Social Workers; Logistical Chairman of Newton's Mayor's Community Prayer Breakfast; Logistical Chairman of the Newton Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Celebration; Treasurer; Board Member – Academy of Certified Social Work Managers; National Association of Social Workers; Club Advisor and President - Newton Youth Commission; Rotary Club Past President, District Trustee, District Public Relations, Newton Club Advisor and President and Newton Youth Commission. He received numerous honors and recognitions in his leadership role in Social Work including: Foundation for Racial, Ethnic, and Religious Harmony Special Recognition Award; Newton Community Block Grant Program recipient; The First Annual Malcolm Flash Award for Outstanding leadership and contributions for low and moderate-income citizens; Massachusetts National Association of Social Workers-Greatest Contribution to Social Work Practice; Boston Celtics "Heroes Among Us" Award; Newton Youth Commission Service Award; Anthony J. Bibbo Youth Center – Naming and Opening of the Facility & Program; Russell J. Halloran Lifetime Achievement Award - sponsored by Newton Parks and Recreation Commission; Super Star and Leading Light Award – In recognition of 43 years of devoted service on behalf of the Newton Community Service Centers Inc.; Community Quarterback Award - Eastern Bank: Presented by New England Patriots Doug Flutie; Outstanding Newton Rotarian Award; Newton-Needham Robert Tennant Award for Community Service; Inducted into the New England AAU Sports Hall of Fame as Co-Founder of the New England Girls AAU Basketball; Newton- Needham Chamber of Commerce Achievement Award; The Newton Rotary Anthony J. Bibbo Scholarship for Senior High School Student NNHS, NSHS, METCO; The First Board and only Recognition Award in 25 years in Los Angeles For Unparallel Service by the National Network of Social Work Management. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, September 6th, at 11:00am at St. John the Evangelist Church (9 Glen Road, Wellesley, MA 02481).
