I am saddened that I had the privilege of working with John only for the last four or five years because he was a very special person and a wonderful colleague. Like many who knew John, I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

My condolences to Rachel and your children, whom I do not know, and to John's father and brothers whom I do know. I met John when he was a young teenager running many miles every day in sunny southern California. His father, George, was my boss at Delta Resources and his mother, Tu Ha, my friend and owner of the restaurant where I very often ate with George at the end of another very long day. Even as a young man John demonstrated a care and concern for others and it was clear that his “moral compass” would lead him to do great things for others.

Although I kept up with his personal and professional achievements through conversations with George, I was delighted when I saw his name on the bulletin from Northeastern University School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs. Through e-mails we caught up with each other and began what I expected to be a long-time correspondence, and I looked forward meeting Rachel and the children when George and Linda came to Boston.

At this time of great sorrow, I hope you find comfort in the words from Rabindranath Tagore: “Death is not extinguishing the Light; it is putting out the Lamp because the Dawn has come.”
Too soon has John faced the Dawn of eternity …

Dear Rachel, I did not know John, but I knew you as an adorable, spirited little girl, sitting on my lap as I read stories to you and Danny and Rachel. I send you lots of love and sincere condolences. Judy (Silverman) Ames

Please accept my condolences at this difficult time. I was deeply moved when I read the announcement by City Year staff last night on Twitter.

As context, John was an dear friend and academic colleague, from my days at GW working in the Office of Community Service.

I think we firstmet at the COOL Conference back in the 1990s, doing the first launch of Into the Streets.

He became a legend, icon, and ambassador for what thoughtful service embodied.

I will miss his spirit and energy as well as friendship over the years, conferences, and issues.
