How do you begin again? The tears have been shed, the songs have been sung, the eulogies delivered and the candles extinguished The dawn brings a new day. the sun rises and shines upon a day that is now eerily empty. A pebble tossed in a lake, ripples ever expanding then mirrored glass, as if nothing had been there at all. BUT YOU WOULD BE PROFOUNDLY MISTAKEN!
Paul's kindness, warmth and welcoming way lives on and is clearly evident in Patty, Karen and Paul. Lorraine is the embodiment of love and loyalty and proof positive that husband and wife can be best friends. Like polished glass, Lorraine and Paul reflected the best qualities of the other. The integrity demonstrated by Paul seemed rooted in the sound belief that the difference between right and wrong is easily determined by what your heart tells you. All that was good in Paul is a legacy that lives on his family today.
Those left behind now lament "He is gone". But those loved ones that preceded Paul now rejoice and exclaim "Here he comes!" There is no doubt that he is in the company of his parents, brothers and sisters and probably preparing a joke to play on the rest of us when we get there.
When that cold winter day cruelly took his fingers he did not wallow in self pity, he bravely persevered. Nothing would prevent him from supporting his family. Paul passed every department required fitness for duty test with one hand. Paul demonstrated by living, breathing example that in the face of adversity you MUST PERSEVERE. and that is what we must do now. Persevere!
The stuff of heroes cannot be found on the silver screen. Those are fleeting, hollow images set to music. The stuff of real heroes has no sound track but is far more dignified, substantial and long lasting. The stuff of heroes is Paul Doherty.
It is a privilege to have known you. You are the finest kind. We will never forget you.
With all our love.
Ed and Kerry
